Shrine & Altar Locations

Throughout your journey in Embervale, you'll encounter two crucial types of structures that are vital for your progression and survival: Flame Shrines and Ancient Altars. Understanding their purpose and knowing their locations is key to strengthening your Flame, unlocking new crafting recipes, and expanding your buildable area.

Flame Shrines: Enhancing Your Flame

Flame Shrines are scattered across the world and serve as points where you can offer Spark and Shroud Cores to upgrade your Flame Altar. Each upgrade to your Flame Altar provides significant benefits, including:

  • Increased Shroud Passage Time (allowing you to stay in the Shroud longer).
  • Expanded Crafting Recipes (unlocking new gear, tools, and building materials).
  • Higher Character Attribute Bonuses (improving your core stats).
  • Extended Build Area (giving you more space to construct your base).

Activating a Flame Shrine typically involves clearing out any nearby Shroud-corrupted enemies and then interacting with the glowing pedestal. Always be prepared for a fight when approaching a shrine, as they are often guarded.

Notable Flame Shrine Locations:

  • Springlands Flame Shrine (Initial Upgrade): This is likely the first shrine you'll encounter. Located just north-east of the starting Cinder Vault, past the first patch of Shroud. Requires 1x Spark and 1x Shroud Core. Essential for your first Flame Altar upgrade.
  • Revelwood Flame Shrine: Found deep within the Revelwood region, often requiring you to navigate through dense Shroud and challenging enemies. Look for it near the large, ancient trees. This shrine often requires more advanced materials like Glimmering Shroud Cores.
  • Kindlewastes Flame Shrine: Situated in the scorching deserts of the Kindlewastes. This shrine is usually atop a prominent rock formation or within a canyon, offering a panoramic view. Expect tougher, fire-themed enemies.

Ancient Altars: Claiming Your Territory

Ancient Altars are the heart of your base-building efforts. Placing an Ancient Altar claims a circular area around it, allowing you to construct structures, place crafting stations, and store your precious loot safely. You can only have a limited number of active Ancient Altars at any given time, so choose their locations wisely.

To place an Ancient Altar, you'll need specific resources, which increase in quantity and rarity with each subsequent altar you wish to place. The initial altar is relatively cheap, but later ones will demand more significant investments.

Placing Your First Ancient Altar:

  1. Gather Resources: For your very first Ancient Altar, you'll typically need 5x Stone and 5x Wood Logs. These are easily found by breaking rocks and chopping down trees near your starting location.
  2. Open the Build Menu: Press the designated key (default 'B' on PC) to open your building menu.
  3. Select "Ancient Altar": Navigate to the "Functional" or "Utility" tab and select the Ancient Altar from the list.
  4. Choose a Location: Find a flat, open area that you wish to claim as your base. Consider proximity to resources, Shroud exits, and potential quest objectives.
  5. Confirm Placement: Once you're satisfied with the location, confirm the placement. A glowing blue circle will appear, indicating your new buildable area.

Strategic Altar Placement Tips:

  • Resource Proximity: Place altars near rich deposits of Flintstone, Copper Ore, or dense forests for easy resource gathering.
  • Fast Travel Points: While not a fast travel point itself, placing an altar near a Shroud exit or a future Ancient Spire can make returning to your base much quicker.
  • Quest Hubs: Consider placing an altar near frequently visited quest areas or NPC locations to reduce travel time.
  • Defensive Positions: If you plan on building a fortified base, choose a location with natural defenses like cliffs or narrow passes.

Remember that you can destroy and relocate Ancient Altars, but you will lose the resources used to craft them. Plan your expansions carefully to optimize your base layout and resource management.
