Cannonbalrog
The Cannonbalrog is a formidable foe encountered on the third floor, the Keep of the Lead Lord. This massive, bullet-shaped monstrosity combines explosive mobility with a relentless barrage of projectiles, demanding precise dodging and strategic positioning. While its attacks can seem overwhelming, understanding its patterns and preparing appropriately will turn this cannonball into a cannon-fodder.
Boss Overview & Arena
The Cannonbalrog fights within a rectangular arena featuring four sturdy pillars. These pillars are crucial for cover and can block some of its projectile attacks, though they are destructible. The boss itself is a large, heavily armored bullet-kin that primarily attacks by bouncing around the room and firing various bullet patterns. Its health bar is substantial, and it becomes significantly more aggressive in its second phase.
Attack Patterns & Counter-Strategies
The Cannonbalrog employs a diverse set of attacks, each requiring a specific approach. Mastering the dodge roll and utilizing the arena's cover are paramount to survival.
Phase 1: Standard Assault
- The Grand Slam:
- Description: The Cannonbalrog leaps high into the air, tracking your position, and then slams down, releasing a massive, dense ring of bullets outwards from its landing point. This is often its opening move.
- Counter-Strategy: As soon as it jumps, start moving. The key is to anticipate its landing spot. Perform a dodge roll through the bullet ring as it expands. Do not try to outrun it; the spread is too wide. Alternatively, if you have enough distance, you can sometimes weave between the bullets, but rolling is generally safer.
- Targeted Volley:
- Description: The Cannonbalrog pauses briefly, aims directly at your current position, and fires a rapid burst of 3-5 large, slow-moving bullets in a straight line.
- Counter-Strategy: This attack is relatively easy to dodge. Simply strafe to the side as it fires. The bullets are slow enough that a single dodge roll is usually sufficient to evade the entire volley. Use this opportunity to deal damage.
- Spiral Barrage:
- Description: While stationary, the Cannonbalrog spins rapidly, firing a continuous stream of bullets in a wide spiral pattern that expands outwards.
- Counter-Strategy: Maintain a medium distance. Circle around the boss, moving with the spiral. You can often find gaps to walk through without needing to dodge roll. If a bullet is directly in your path, a quick dodge roll will clear it. This is another excellent window for sustained damage.
- Minion Summon (Bullet-Kin Reinforcements):
- Description: The Cannonbalrog will occasionally stop and summon 2-3 standard Bullet-Kin or Shotgun Kin to assist it.
- Counter-Strategy: Prioritize these minions immediately. While they are not individually threatening, their combined fire can quickly overwhelm you, especially when combined with the Cannonbalrog's attacks. A single well-placed shot from your primary weapon should dispatch them. Clear them out before refocusing on the boss.
Phase 2: Enraged Barrage (Below ~50% Health)
Once the Cannonbalrog's health drops below approximately 50%, it enters an enraged state. Its attacks become faster, more frequent, and often combine elements, making the fight significantly more challenging.
- Enhanced Grand Slam:
- Description: The Grand Slam now releases two concentric rings of bullets, or a denser, faster single ring. It may also perform this attack more frequently.
- Counter-Strategy: The strategy remains similar: dodge roll through the expanding rings. However, timing becomes more critical due to the increased density or speed. Be prepared for less recovery time between slams.
- Rapid Targeted Volley:
- Description: The Cannonbalrog fires longer bursts of targeted shots (5-7 bullets) and may fire them in quick succession, sometimes followed by another attack.
- Counter-Strategy: Stay highly mobile. Strafe continuously. You may need to perform multiple dodge rolls to evade the extended volley. Do not get complacent; assume another attack is coming immediately after.
- Spiral & Slam Combo:
- Description: This is one of its most dangerous enraged attacks. The Cannonbalrog will initiate a Spiral Barrage, and while still firing, it will perform a Grand Slam, releasing its bullet ring on top of the existing spiral pattern.
- Counter-Strategy: This requires extreme awareness. Your primary focus should be on creating space. Try to position yourself near a pillar before the slam to use it as temporary cover from the spiral, then dodge roll through the slam's ring. Blanks are incredibly effective here to clear the screen and give you breathing room.
General Strategies & Tips
- Stay Mobile: Constant movement is your best defense. Never stand still for long.
- Utilize Pillars: The four pillars in the arena can block many of the Cannonbalrog's projectiles, especially its targeted shots and parts of its spiral. Use them for temporary cover, but be aware they are destructible.
- Blanks are Your Friend: Save your Blanks for critical moments, especially during the enraged phase when bullet density is highest or during the Spiral & Slam combo. They can clear the screen and prevent significant damage.
- Focus Fire: When the Cannonbalrog is stationary (during its targeted volley or spiral barrage), unleash as much damage as possible. These are your primary damage windows.
- Minion Management: Always prioritize the summoned Bullet-Kin. They add unnecessary bullet hell to an already intense fight.
Recommended Loadouts & Synergies
While any weapon can defeat the Cannonbalrog with good dodging, certain weapon types and item synergies can make the fight significantly easier.
Weapon Choices:
- High DPS Automatic Weapons: Weapons like the AK-47, Machine Pistol, or Lead Pistol allow for sustained damage during its stationary phases.
- Shotguns/Spread Weapons: Weapons like the Shotgun or Sawed-Off can deal massive burst damage when you're close, especially after dodging a Grand Slam. They are also effective for clearing summoned minions quickly.
- Explosive Weapons: The Grenade Launcher or RPG can deal splash damage to the Cannonbalrog and its minions simultaneously, though careful aiming is required.
- Beam Weapons: The Laser Rifle or Proton Backpack offer consistent damage and can often hit the boss even while you're focusing on dodging.
Item Synergies & Passives:
- Damage Upgrades: Any item that boosts your damage output (e.g., Heavy Bullets, Scope) will shorten the fight, reducing the number of patterns you need to contend with.
- Movement Speed Upgrades: Items like Boots of Speed or Rolling Eye make dodging easier and allow for quicker repositioning.
- Bullet Modifiers: Items that add piercing (Ghost Bullets) or homing (Homing Bullets) can be beneficial, especially against the Cannonbalrog's large hitbox and its minions.
- Blank-Related Items: Any item that grants extra Blanks (Blank Bullets) or improves their effect can be a lifesaver.
- Armor/Health Upgrades: Armor, Heart Containers, or Full Metal Jacket provide a buffer against mistakes.
Common Pitfalls & How to Avoid Them
- Getting Cornered: The Cannonbalrog's bounces can push you into corners, making it difficult to dodge its Grand Slam or other wide-area attacks. Always try to stay in the center of the arena or near a pillar with open space behind you.
- Ignoring Minions: Letting Bullet-Kin accumulate will quickly lead to being overwhelmed by too many projectiles. Deal with them as soon as they appear.
- Wasting Blanks: While Blanks are crucial, don't use them for every minor bullet. Save them for dense bullet patterns, especially during the enraged phase or when you're about to take unavoidable damage.
- Panicking During Enrage: The second phase is intense, but the patterns are still predictable. Take a deep breath, focus on one bullet at a time, and rely on your dodge roll.
- Standing Too Close During Spiral: While you can damage the boss during its Spiral Barrage, getting too close makes the bullets denser and harder to weave through. Maintain a comfortable distance.
