11.8. Countering Common Tactics
Escape from Tarkov is a game of adaptation, and understanding how to counter common player tactics is crucial for survival. Whether it's aggressive pushes, camping, or specific flanking maneuvers, knowing how to recognize and respond effectively can turn the tide of a firefight and secure your loot.
One of the most common tactics is 'camping' – players holding a specific advantageous position, often near extracts or high-traffic loot spots. To counter this, use grenades to flush them out, or flank them if possible. If you suspect a camper, move deliberately and use cover, listening for any sounds that might indicate their presence. Another tactic is the 'aggressive push,' where players rush towards gunfire or known enemy locations. If you're on the receiving end, use the environment for cover, reposition yourself, and aim to catch them off guard as they push. If you're the aggressor, be aware that your opponent might be preparing an ambush.
Here are common tactics and how to counter them:
- Camping: Use grenades, flanking maneuvers, or careful observation to dislodge campers.
- Aggressive Pushing: Reposition, use cover, and prepare an ambush for rushing players.
- Sound Trapping: Players listen for footsteps to pinpoint enemies. Counter by moving slowly, using silenced weapons, or creating diversions.
- Extract Camping: Players wait near extraction points. Approach extracts cautiously, check common hiding spots, and be ready for a fight.
- Third-Partying: Engaging players already in a firefight. If you hear a fight, assess the situation before engaging; you might become the third party yourself.
Understanding the flow of a raid and common player behavior is key. For instance, players often move predictably towards objectives or extracts. If you can anticipate their path, you can set up an ambush. Conversely, if you're caught in a disadvantageous position, don't be afraid to disengage and reposition. The goal is to survive and extract with your loot, not necessarily to win every single fight. Always be aware of your surroundings and the potential for other players to be listening or watching. A well-placed mine or a carefully thrown grenade can also deter common tactics.
