4.10. Grenades and Explosives Guide

Grenades and explosives are vital tools in Escape from Tarkov, capable of flushing out entrenched enemies, breaching defenses, and turning the tide of a firefight. Mastering their use requires an understanding of their types, throwing mechanics, and tactical application.

Grenades and explosives in Escape from Tarkov can be broadly categorized into several types, each with its own purpose. Fragmentation grenades, such as the 'RGD-5' or 'F-1', are the most common. They detonate after a short fuse, scattering shrapnel that can inflict damage to players and AI within their blast radius. These are excellent for flushing enemies out of cover, clearing rooms, or damaging armored targets. Flashbangs, like the 'M67' or 'Stun Grenade', disorient enemies with a bright flash and loud bang, temporarily blinding and deafening them. They are invaluable for initiating pushes into fortified positions or disorienting an opponent before closing the distance. Smoke grenades, such as the 'TGS-8' or 'RDG-2', create a cloud of smoke, obscuring vision. They are useful for creating cover to advance, reposition, or escape a dangerous situation. Incendiary grenades, like the 'Molotov Cocktail', create a patch of fire that deals damage over time to anyone caught within it. They are effective for area denial or forcing enemies out of cover. Specialized explosives include items like the 'M67 Frag Grenade' (a powerful fragmentation grenade) and various types of mines. Throwing mechanics are crucial. You can aim your throws by holding down the right mouse button before throwing. The longer you hold it, the further the grenade will travel. Be mindful of the fuse timer; it starts as soon as you pull the pin. Practice your throws in offline mode to get a feel for the arc and detonation time. Tactical applications include: Room Clearing: Toss a frag or flashbang into a room before entering. Breaching Defenses: Use grenades to dislodge enemies holding strong defensive positions. Area Denial: Use incendiaries or smoke to control chokepoints. Escape Cover: Deploy smoke to cover your retreat. Always be aware of your surroundings when throwing grenades, as you can accidentally damage yourself or your teammates. Carrying several grenades can significantly increase your tactical options and survivability in Tarkov.
