4.9. Melee Weapons Guide
While often overlooked in favor of firearms, melee weapons in Escape from Tarkov can be surprisingly effective tools for silent takedowns, close-quarters emergencies, and even specific quest objectives. Mastering their use can provide a unique edge, especially when ammunition is scarce or stealth is paramount.
Melee weapons in Tarkov range from simple knives and axes to more specialized items like swords and bayonets. Their primary advantage is their silence, making them ideal for eliminating lone Scavs or unsuspecting players without alerting others. They also take up minimal inventory space, making them a good backup option. However, their effectiveness is highly dependent on your ability to get close to your target without being detected or shot. The damage and penetration values vary significantly between different melee weapons, so choosing the right one for the situation is important.
Types of melee weapons and their uses:
- Knives (e.g., Combat Knife, Morale Knife): Lightweight, fast, and good for silent kills. Excellent for early-game or when stealth is critical.
- Axes (e.g., Hatchet, Fire Axe): Higher damage and penetration than knives, but slower. Can be effective against lightly armored targets.
- Bayonets: Attach to specific firearms, allowing for a melee attack without switching weapons. Useful for surprise close-range defense.
- Swords and Machetes: Offer high damage and can be effective against multiple targets or tougher opponents, but are slower and more conspicuous.
When using melee weapons, positioning and timing are everything. Try to flank your target or approach from behind. Utilize the environment to break line of sight before closing the distance. The 'attack' key (default is Left Mouse Button) is used for swinging. Some melee weapons have a faster 'stab' attack (default is Right Mouse Button) which can be useful for quick strikes. Remember that melee combat is high-risk; if your target spots you, they will likely engage with their firearm, putting you at a severe disadvantage. Always consider your escape route if your melee attempt fails. Certain quests, like some from Jaeger, may specifically require the use of melee weapons.
