Game Modes Explained — Escape from Tarkov Guide

Escape from Tarkov game modes: PMC raids and Scav raids. Learn about offline mode, Flea Market, and the core raid loop for survival.

1.2. Game Modes Explained — Escape from Tarkov Guide

Escape from Tarkov offers a unique gameplay experience primarily centered around its core "raid" system. While there aren't distinct game modes in the traditional sense like deathmatch or capture the flag, understanding the different ways you can enter a raid is crucial.

The fundamental gameplay loop of Escape from Tarkov revolves around entering Raids. These are session-based encounters where players spawn into a persistent, albeit temporary, instance of a map with the goal of looting, completing objectives, and extracting. The duration of a raid varies depending on the map, typically ranging from 15 minutes to 45 minutes.

There are two primary ways to enter a raid:

  1. PMC (Private Military Contractor) Raids:

When you choose to play as your PMC, you spawn into a raid with the gear you have equipped from your Stash. This is your main character's progression. If you survive and extract, you keep all the gear you brought in and any loot you acquired during the raid. However, if you die, you lose everything you brought in and found, except for items stored in your Secure Container. PMC raids are where you complete quests, level up your skills, and accumulate wealth for your character.

  2. Scav (Scavenger) Raids:

Scav raids are essentially "free" runs. You spawn into a raid with a random loadout, which can range from a basic pistol to a fully kitted weapon. Your Scav character is temporary; any gear you bring in or find is only for that specific raid. If you die as a Scav, you lose everything, but it doesn't impact your PMC's progression. Scav raids are excellent for learning maps, gathering basic supplies, and earning money without risking your PMC's gear. A key mechanic in Scav raids is your reputation with AI Scavs; if you don't attack them, they will generally leave you alone and may even help you against hostile PMCs.

Other Game Modes/Features:

  • Offline Mode: This mode allows you to enter any map without the risk of losing gear or impacting your PMC's progression. It's invaluable for learning map layouts, practicing combat against AI Scavs (if enabled), and testing weapon builds without consequence. You cannot extract with loot or gain experience in offline mode.
  • The Flea Market: While not a game mode, it's a crucial player-driven economy where you can buy and sell items with other players. This is a vital part of the game's economy and progression.
  • Hideout: Your personal base where you can craft items, upgrade modules, and manage your inventory.

The core of Escape from Tarkov's gameplay is the high-stakes raid. The tension and consequence associated with each raid are what define the experience. Whether you're a seasoned PMC or a fresh Scav, every entry into a raid is a gamble for survival and reward.
