5.1. Weapon Classes Overview
Understanding the diverse array of weapon classes in Escape from Tarkov is fundamental to effective combat. Each class offers unique advantages, disadvantages, and optimal use cases, influencing your engagement range, recoil control, and overall combat effectiveness.
The primary weapon classes include:
- Pistols: Compact, lightweight, and easy to conceal. Pistols are excellent backup weapons or for players on a budget. They have low damage and penetration but can be surprisingly effective at close range, especially with good ammunition. Examples include the TT-30, Makarov PM, and Glock 17.
- Submachine Guns (SMGs): Ideal for close-quarters combat (CQC) and urban environments. SMGs offer high rates of fire and good maneuverability. They excel at shredding unarmored targets but struggle against high-tier body armor. Examples include the MP5, P90, and PP-19 "Vityaz".
- Assault Rifles (ARs): The workhorses of Tarkov. Versatile and effective at medium ranges, ARs are suitable for most combat scenarios. They offer a good balance of firepower, accuracy, and rate of fire. Examples include the AKM, M4A1, and HK 416A5.
- Carbines: Similar to assault rifles but often chambered in smaller calibers or with shorter barrels. They offer good mobility and are effective at medium ranges. Examples include the SKS and ADAR 2-15.
- Desated Marksman Rifles (DMRs): Bridge the gap between assault rifles and sniper rifles. DMRs offer higher accuracy and damage than ARs, making them excellent for engaging targets at longer medium ranges. Examples include the M1A and RSASS.
- Sniper Rifles: Desed for extreme long-range engagements. Sniper rifles boast high accuracy, damage, and penetration, capable of one-shotting many targets. However, they are slow to fire and offer poor close-quarters performance. Examples include the Mosin, SV-98, and M700.
- Shotguns: Devastating at very close range, especially with buckshot or slugs. Shotguns are effective against unarmored or lightly armored targets but lose effectiveness rapidly with distance. Examples include the MP-133 and Saiga-12.
- Machine Guns: Offer sustained suppressive fire but are heavy, slow to aim, and have high recoil. Best used for holding down positions or against large groups. Examples include the RPK-16 and PKP "Pecheneg".
Each weapon can be heavily customized with various attachments like scopes, lasers, grips, and suppressors, further tailoring their performance to your playstyle and the specific map you're raiding.
| Weapon Class | Optimal Range | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pistol | Close | Concealable, cheap | Low damage/penetration |
| SMG | Close-to-Medium | High RoF, mobile | Poor against armor |
| Assault Rifle | Medium | Versatile, balanced | Can be bulky |
| DMR | Medium-to-Long | Accurate, high damage | Slower RoF |
| Sniper Rifle | Long-to-Extreme | High damage/penetration | Slow, poor CQC |
