Prologue
Welcome to Yaughton Valley. This initial section serves as your introduction to the game's unique narrative and exploration mechanics. Take your time, absorb the atmosphere, and familiarize yourself with the controls. There are no immediate threats or puzzles; the goal is to observe and listen.
Initial Steps and Controls
- Awakening: You'll begin in a small, enclosed room. Your character, Kate, will slowly gain consciousness.
- Movement: Use the left analog stick to move. Remember, Kate walks at a deliberate pace. There is no run button, so embrace the unhurried exploration.
- Camera Control: Use the right analog stick to look around.
- Interaction: The primary interaction button is X (PlayStation). This will be used to open doors, activate radios, and initiate "memories."
Exploring the Starting Area
Once you gain control, your first objective is simply to exit the room and begin your journey through the deserted village.
- Open the Door: Approach the door directly in front of you and press X to open it.
- First Steps into Yaughton: You'll emerge into a small, overgrown courtyard. Take a moment to look around. Notice the subtle environmental storytelling – the untouched nature, the quiet stillness.
- Follow the Path: A clear path leads out of this initial area. Follow it, allowing the game to guide you through the initial tutorial of movement and observation.
First Encounters with the Light
As you progress, you'll start to encounter the ethereal light phenomena that are central to the game's narrative. These are not merely visual effects; they are the remnants of the town's inhabitants and hold the key to understanding what transpired.
- Observing the Light: You'll see shimmering, golden light forms. These are "memories" or echoes of past events.
- Activating Memories: When you approach a cluster of light, it will often coalesce into a more distinct shape. To activate the memory and hear the associated dialogue, stand within the light and wait. Sometimes, you may need to adjust your position slightly to find the "sweet spot" where the memory fully forms.
- First Memory Location: The first significant memory you'll encounter will likely be near a set of abandoned cars or a small garden area just outside the initial courtyard. Listen carefully to the voices; they provide crucial context to the unfolding mystery.
Proceeding to the Village Proper
Continue following the natural progression of the environment. The game is designed to gently lead you forward without explicit waypoints.
- Road Ahead: You'll soon reach a paved road. Turn left and follow it towards what appears to be the main part of the village.
- Environmental Clues: Pay attention to details like open doors, scattered belongings, and abandoned vehicles. These are all subtle clues about the lives of the people who once inhabited Yaughton.
- Radio Activation: Keep an eye out for radios. The first one you'll likely find is on a picnic table or a porch. Interact with it using X to hear broadcasts that further flesh out the story. These are vital for piecing together the events leading up to the "Rapture."
The prologue concludes as you delve deeper into the deserted village, setting the stage for the individual narratives of Jeremy, Wendy, Frank, Lizzie, Stephen, and Kate herself.
