Enemy Types & Weaknesses
Albion is a dangerous place, and understanding your foes is crucial for survival and efficient combat. This section details the common enemy types you'll encounter, their attack patterns, and most importantly, their weaknesses. Mastering these strategies will ensure your journey to the throne is a smooth one.
Hobbes
These diminutive, goblin-like creatures are often encountered in large groups. While individually weak, their numbers can quickly overwhelm an unprepared hero. They primarily attack with crude melee weapons or by swarming you.
- Weaknesses:
- Magic: Hobbes are particularly susceptible to area-of-effect spells. A well-placed Fireball or Shock spell can clear out entire groups in seconds. Consider upgrading your magic gauntlets early for maximum impact.
- Melee: While less efficient against large groups, a strong melee weapon like the Dragonbone Sword (found in the Catacombs beneath Bowerstone Castle) can dispatch individual Hobbes quickly. Use wide swings to hit multiple targets.
- Strategy: Prioritize crowd control. If you're using a ranged weapon, aim for the larger Hobbes first, as they often have slightly more health and can deal more damage. Dodge their charges and use flourishes to knock them back.
Hollow Men
The reanimated skeletons of fallen warriors, Hollow Men are a persistent threat, especially in ancient ruins and graveyards. They attack with rusty weapons and can sometimes throw bones.
- Weaknesses:
- Melee: Hollow Men are brittle. A powerful melee attack, especially a charged flourish, can shatter them instantly. Weapons with high damage output like the Master Longsword (purchased from the Bowerstone Market Blacksmith after certain renown levels) are highly effective.
- Fire Magic: While not as instant as a melee shatter, Fireball spells can ignite and slowly burn Hollow Men, dealing continuous damage. This is useful for softening up groups before engaging in melee.
- Strategy: Focus on single targets with strong melee attacks. If facing multiple Hollow Men, use flourishes to create space and then pick them off one by one. Be wary of their bone throws, which can interrupt your attacks.
Balverines
These swift and ferocious wolf-like beasts are a significant threat, known for their speed, agility, and powerful claw attacks. They often hunt in packs and can quickly close distances.
- Weaknesses:
- Ranged Weapons: Balverines are incredibly fast, making them difficult to hit with melee attacks. A powerful rifle or pistol, such as the Tears of Avo (found during the "Gift" quest in Silverpines), allows you to keep your distance and pepper them with shots. Aim for headshots for critical damage.
- Time Control Magic: The Slow Time spell is invaluable against Balverines. It allows you to land multiple hits with either ranged or melee weapons while they are incapacitated.
- Strategy: Maintain distance at all costs. If they get too close, use a dodge roll to create space. Focus fire on one Balverine at a time to reduce the pack's numbers quickly. Consider upgrading your ranged weapon's damage and reload speed.
Mercenaries
Human adversaries, Mercenaries are well-equipped and often utilize both melee and ranged attacks. They can be found guarding various locations and are more tactically aware than other enemy types.
- Weaknesses:
- Magic (Area-of-Effect & Single Target): Mercenaries, being human, are vulnerable to all forms of magic. Inferno or Shock can clear out groups, while a focused Force Push can knock them off ledges or into environmental hazards.
- Melee (Counter-Attacks): Their predictable attack patterns make them ideal targets for counter-attacks. Block their incoming strikes and then unleash a powerful flourish. Weapons like the Thunderbolt hammer (reward for the "Gnome Hunt" quest) are excellent for breaking their guard.
- Strategy: Prioritize ranged Mercenaries first, as their shots can interrupt your attacks. Use cover when available. If you have a companion, direct them to engage melee Mercenaries while you deal with ranged threats. loot them for gold and occasional potions.
Dark Skeletons
More formidable versions of Hollow Men, Dark Skeletons possess greater health, stronger attacks, and often wield more dangerous weapons. They are typically found in later game areas or challenging side quests.
- Weaknesses:
- Light Magic: While not a direct spell, certain weapons imbued with light properties or the Smite spell (if unlocked) can deal increased damage to Dark Skeletons. Look for legendary weapons with "holy" or "light" attributes.
- Charged Melee Attacks: Similar to regular Hollow Men, powerful charged melee attacks are highly effective. However, you'll need to be more precise with your timing due to their increased resilience. The Jack's Hammer (found in the Ossuary) is a prime candidate for this.
- Strategy: Treat Dark Skeletons with extreme caution. Avoid being surrounded. Use dodge rolls to evade their heavy attacks and then counter with your strongest melee flourishes. If you have a powerful ranged weapon, consider softening them up from a distance before closing in.
