Vehicle Management
While the vast majority of your journey through the wastes will be on foot, the discovery of a working vehicle can dramatically alter your travel experience, reducing travel time and random encounters, and providing much-needed mobile storage. This section will guide you through acquiring, maintaining, and utilizing your very own Highwayman.
Acquiring the Highwayman
The legendary Highwayman is not simply handed to you; it requires a significant investment of time, caps, and mechanical aptitude. Here's how to get your hands on this wasteland marvel:
- Locate the Chassis: Your first step is to find the derelict Highwayman. It's located in The Den, specifically in the northern section, near the junkyard and the tent where Rebecca sells her wares. It's hard to miss once you're in the area.
-
Obtain the Fuel Cell Controller: This crucial component is found in Gecko.
- Travel to Gecko and head to the main power plant.
- Speak with Skeeter, the ghoul mechanic, or enter the plant directly.
- Navigate through the plant until you reach the central control room.
- The Fuel Cell Controller can be found on a shelf or in a locker within this room. A high Perception stat or careful searching will reveal it.
-
Acquire the Fuel Cells: The Highwayman runs on specialized fuel. You'll need two Uranium Fuel Cells.
- Return to Gecko.
- These can often be purchased from Skeeter in the power plant, or occasionally found as loot in the plant itself.
- Alternatively, you can find them in Vault City. Check the various storage lockers and containers in the residential areas or the courtyard.
- A third, more challenging option is to acquire them from the Broken Hills mine, though this often involves combat with various creatures.
-
Repair the Engine: With the components in hand, return to the Highwayman in The Den.
- Use your Repair skill on the Highwayman. A skill level of at least 75% is highly recommended for a successful repair.
- If your Repair skill is insufficient, you can seek assistance. In The Den, try speaking with Smitty, the mechanic found near the car. He can repair it for a hefty sum of caps (typically 1000-2000 caps) if you provide the parts.
Fueling and Maintenance
Once operational, the Highwayman isn't a set-it-and-forget-it affair. It requires regular fueling to keep you moving across the wasteland.
- Fuel Type: The Highwayman exclusively uses Small Energy Cells as fuel. These are common ammunition for energy weapons, so you'll likely accumulate a good supply throughout your adventures.
- Refueling: To refuel, simply open your inventory, select a stack of Small Energy Cells, and use them on the Highwayman. Each cell provides a small amount of fuel. It's advisable to carry several hundred cells for extended journeys.
- Fuel Consumption: The Highwayman consumes fuel with every hex traveled on the world map. Longer distances and more frequent travel will naturally deplete your fuel supply faster. Keep an eye on your fuel gauge, accessible by clicking on the car icon on your interface.
- Emergency Repairs: While the Highwayman is generally robust, it can take damage during special encounters or certain scripted events. If it becomes damaged, you can use your Repair skill on it, or seek out a mechanic in major settlements like New Reno or Vault City for professional repairs. Always carry a few Tool Kits or Super Tool Kits for on-the-go fixes.
Strategic Use of the Highwayman
The Highwayman offers significant advantages, but also comes with minor considerations.
- Reduced Travel Time: This is the primary benefit. The Highwayman drastically cuts down the time spent traveling between locations on the world map, allowing you to complete quests and explore new areas much faster.
- Fewer Random Encounters: While not eliminating them entirely, traveling by car significantly reduces the frequency of random encounters, saving you ammunition, health, and time.
- Mobile Storage: The Highwayman has a trunk that functions as a portable container. This is invaluable for hoarding loot, extra weapons, and supplies without burdening your inventory or your companions. To access the trunk, simply click on the car and select the "Open Trunk" option.
- Companion Capacity: The Highwayman can transport all your current companions, eliminating the need for them to walk alongside you on the world map.
- Parking: When entering a town or specific location, the Highwayman will automatically park at a designated spot, usually near the entrance. You cannot drive it within town maps.
- Theft Risk: While rare, there is a small chance of the Highwayman being stolen if left unattended in certain hostile areas, particularly in The Den if you have a low reputation. Always be mindful of where you leave your prized possession.
Mastering vehicle management will transform your Fallout 2 experience, making the vast wasteland feel much more manageable and your journey to find the G.E.C.K. significantly smoother.
