Boss Guides

The Commonwealth is home to uniquely formidable threats that require specific tactics to overcome. This guide provides detailed strategies, weaknesses, recommended gear, and notable rewards for Fallout 4's most challenging boss-level encounters. Prepare yourself, Sole Survivor—these fights will test your mettle.

Conrad Kellogg

Kellogg is a mandatory story boss and your first major human threat, a cybernetically-enhanced mercenary who serves as a significant roadblock in the main quest.

Encounter Details

  • Quest: Reunions
  • Location: Fort Hagen Command Center

Attack Patterns & Abilities

  • Stealth Boy: Kellogg frequently uses a personal Stealth Boy, making him temporarily invisible.
  • Grenades: He will use Frag Grenades to flush you out of cover.
  • Kellogg's Pistol: His powerful .44 Magnum deals significant damage.
  • Synth Backup: The encounter begins with two Gen 1 Synths providing support.

Strategy & Recommended Gear

The key to this fight is managing Kellogg's invisibility and his Synth companions.

  • General Strategy: Before initiating dialogue, place Proximity Mines at the doorways where the Synths will enter. Use V.A.T.S. to target Kellogg as soon as he cloaks; while your hit chance will be low, it allows you to track his position. The Fat Man found in the Fort Hagen armory can be used to start the fight with a massive burst of damage.
  • Stealth Build: A suppressed rifle with the Ninja and Mister Sandman perks can deal devastating damage from stealth before the fight even begins. Hide behind the initial doorway and pick off his Synths before focusing on him.
  • Power Armor/Heavy Build: A full suit of Power Armor will mitigate most of his pistol damage. Use a Minigun to shred his Synth allies, then corner Kellogg and keep the pressure on so he has no time to cloak or heal.
  • Melee Build: Use chems like Psycho and Jet to slow time and boost your damage. The Blitz perk is invaluable for closing the distance instantly when he reappears from stealth.

Notable Rewards

  • Kellogg's Pistol: A unique .44 pistol that refills your Action Points on a critical hit.
  • Kellogg's Outfit: A unique outfit with good damage and energy resistance.
  • Cybernetic Brain Augmenter: A quest item needed to progress to the Memory Den.

Swan

A legendary Super Mutant Behemoth, Swan is one of the most powerful randomly-encountered enemies in the base game.

Encounter Details

  • Location: Swan's Pond, located in the Boston Common near Park Street Station.
  • Activation: Approaching the small island in the center of the pond will cause him to emerge.

Attack Patterns & Abilities

  • Anchor Smash: A devastating, high-damage melee attack with his makeshift ship anchor.
  • Rock Throw: A surprisingly accurate and damaging ranged attack.
  • Ground Slam: An area-of-effect (AoE) attack that staggers and damages anyone nearby.

Strategy & Recommended Gear

The environment is your greatest asset. Use the trees, benches, and surrounding buildings as cover from his rocks and to break his line of sight.

  • General Strategy: Litter the area around his island with Mines before waking him. Crippling his legs is the top priority, as it eliminates his mobility. Keep your distance at all costs.
  • Ranged/Stealth Build: From a safe distance, use a powerful sniper rifle (like a .50 Caliber Hunting Rifle or Gauss Rifle) to target his head for massive sneak attack damage. You may be able to kill him before he even reaches you.
  • Heavy Build: Power Armor is highly recommended. A Fat Man or Missile Launcher can cripple his legs quickly. Once he's slowed, switch to a Minigun or Gatling Laser and aim for his head.
  • Melee Build: Extremely high-risk. This requires a full suit of X-01 Power Armor, a cocktail of chems (Psychojet, Med-X, Bufftats), a powerful weapon like a Super Sledge, and a willingness to reload your save. Focus on his legs first.

Notable Rewards

  • Furious Power Fist: A unique unarmed weapon with the "Furious" legendary effect (damage increases with each consecutive hit on the same target). A top-tier melee weapon.
  • Swan Boat Fragment: A unique junk item.

Mirelurk Queen

These massive, armored matriarchs are the apex predators of the Mirelurk species, posing a significant threat with both ranged and melee attacks.

Encounter Details

  • Locations: The Castle (during "Taking Independence" quest), Murkwater Construction Site, Spectacle Island, Nahant Sheriff's Department, and other coastal areas.

Attack Patterns & Abilities

  • Acid Spit: Her primary ranged attack fires a volley of corrosive acid, which also leaves damaging pools on the ground.
  • Spawns Hatchlings: She will periodically screech and lay a cluster of eggs that spawn numerous Mirelurk Hatchlings.
  • Pincer Charge: A powerful melee charge for close-quarters engagement.

Strategy & Recommended Gear

Control the battlefield by managing distance and eliminating her spawn as quickly as possible.

  • General Strategy: Her weak spots are her face and the two spouts on her back. Targeting these deals significantly more damage. Use explosives like Bottlecap Mines and Frag Grenades to handle crowds of hatchlings and damage her legs.
  • Ranged Build: Find high ground. The walls of The Castle or the roof of the house at Murkwater are perfect. Use a scoped rifle to repeatedly hit her face. Save your criticals for these weak-point shots.
  • Heavy Build: A Missile Launcher or Fat Man is incredibly effective for starting the fight and crippling her legs. Power Armor provides excellent resistance to her Acid Spit. A Flamer can make short work of the hatchlings.

Notable Rewards

  • Mirelurk Queen Meat: A very rare cooking ingredient for a powerful recipe.
  • She often guards areas with high-tier loot chests or steamer trunks.

The Mechanist (Automatron DLC)

The final boss of the Automatron DLC, the fight against the Mechanist is less about a single target and more about enduring an onslaught of robotic minions.

Encounter Details

  • Quest: Restoring Order
  • Location: The Mechanist's Lair

Attack Patterns & Abilities

  • Robot Waves: The primary challenge is surviving three increasingly difficult waves of robots, including Assaultrons, Robobrains, Sentry Bots, and more.
  • Tesla Coils: Electric coils will periodically electrify the floor, dealing energy damage.

Strategy & Recommended Gear

This encounter can be won through combat, intelligence, or charisma.

  • Combat Strategy: Bring weapons effective against robots. Pulse Grenades/Mines are essential. Energy weapons like a modded Laser or Plasma Rifle are ideal. The Robotics Expert perk allows you to hack and disable or incite robots, which can turn the tide. Target combat inhibitors on Assaultrons and fusion cores on Sentry Bots.
  • Intelligence/Hacking Strategy: Use the Robotics Expert perk to its full potential. Shutting down the most dangerous bots (like Assaultrons with their head lasers) simplifies the fight immensely.
  • Charisma/Speech Strategy: If you successfully pass a series of difficult Speech checks during the final dialogue with the Mechanist, you can bypass the combat encounter entirely. This is the fastest and safest resolution.

Notable Rewards

  • Mechanist's Armor & Helmet: A unique set of armor with damage resistance against robots.
  • Unlocks all remaining robot modifications at the Robot Workbench.
