Character Creation Guide

Embarking on your journey in Fallout 76 begins with the crucial first step: character creation. This process not only defines your survivor's appearance but also lays the foundation for their abilities and playstyle through the SPECIAL system and initial perk selection.

Upon launching the game for the first time, you'll be presented with the character creation screen. Here, you can customize your survivor's physical appearance. This includes selecting from several facial features, hairstyles, body types, and skin tones. While these choices are purely cosmetic and do not affect gameplay, they allow you to craft a unique identity for your character in the wasteland. Remember, you can always alter your appearance later in the game via the character customization menu in your Pip-Boy or by building a Barber Chair at your C.A.M.P.

The most impactful part of character creation is the allocation of your SPECIAL points and the initial selection of perk cards. SPECIAL is an acronym representing seven core attributes: Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. Each attribute governs different aspects of your character's capabilities:

  • Strength (S.T.R.): Primarily influences your melee damage, carrying capacity, and the effectiveness of heavy weapons.
  • Perception (P.E.R.): Affects your accuracy with ranged weapons, your ability to detect enemies, and your lockpicking skill.
  • Endurance (E.N.D.): Determines your Action Points (AP), your resistance to damage and radiation, and your sprinting speed.
  • Charisma (C.H.A.): Impacts your ability to persuade NPCs, the effectiveness of your teammates when in a group, and vendor prices.
  • Intelligence (I.N.T.): Influences your hacking skill, the amount of experience points (XP) you gain, and the effectiveness of energy weapons and explosives.
  • Agility (A.G.I.): Governs your stealth capabilities, your AP pool, and your reload speed.
  • Luck (L.U.C.): Affects your critical hit chance, your ability to find better loot, and your resistance to diseases and radiation.

At the start of the game, you'll have a base number of points to distribute among these attributes. As you level up, you'll earn additional points that can be used to further increase your SPECIAL stats. Crucially, each point invested in a SPECIAL attribute also unlocks access to perk cards associated with that attribute. You will draw new perk cards as you level up, and you can equip a limited number of cards for each SPECIAL category.

Initial Perk Card Selection:

After allocating your SPECIAL points, you'll be presented with a selection of perk cards for each attribute. Choose wisely, as these early perks will sificantly influence your initial gameplay experience. For example, if you plan on using rifles, you'll want to select rifle-focused perks under Perception. If you prefer melee combat, Strength-based perks are essential.

Key Considerations for Beginners:

  • Focus on a Playstyle: Decide early on whether you want to be a ranged combatant, a melee fighter, a stealthy operative, or a charismatic diplomat.
  • Don't Spread Too Thin: It's generally more effective to focus your SPECIAL points and perk cards on one or two core attributes rather than spreading them too thinly across all seven.
  • Consider Team Play: If you plan to play with friends, investing in Charisma can be beneficial for team buffs.

Your character build is not set in stone. You can respec your SPECIAL points and change your perk cards as you progress, allowing you to adapt your character to new challenges and discoveries in Appalachia.
