Character Customization Guide
Your character is your avatar in the unforgiving world of Fallout 76, and the initial creation process is your first step in defining your survivor. Beyond the cosmetic choices, the SPECIAL system and perk selections will fundamentally shape your gameplay experience, determining your strengths and weaknesses.
The character creation screen allows you to choose your character's appearance, including facial features, hairstyles, body type, and skin tone. While these choices are purely cosmetic, they allow you to create a survivor that reflects your personal style. Don't spend too long here; you can always change your appearance later in the game at a C.A.M.P. object called a 'Barber Chair' or by using the character customization menu in your Pip-Boy.
The most crucial aspect of character customization occurs during the initial SPECIAL allocation and the subsequent perk card selection. SPECIAL stands for Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. Each of these attributes governs different aspects of your character's abilities:
- Strength (S.T.R.): Affects melee damage, carrying capacity, and the effectiveness of heavy weapons.
- Perception (P.E.R.): Influences your accuracy with ranged weapons, your ability to detect enemies, and lockpicking skill.
- Endurance (E.N.D.): Determines your Action Points (AP), your resistance to damage and radiation, and your sprinting speed.
- Charisma (C.H.A.): Affects your ability to persuade NPCs, the effectiveness of your teammates when you're in a group, and vendor prices.
- Intelligence (I.N.T.): Impacts your hacking skill, the amount of XP you gain, and the effectiveness of energy weapons and explosives.
- Agility (A.G.I.): Governs your stealth capabilities, your AP pool, and your reload speed.
- Luck (L.U.C.): Influences your critical hit chance, your ability to find better loot, and your resistance to diseases and radiation.
When you first create your character, you'll have a set number of points to distribute among these attributes. As you level up, you'll gain additional points to further customize your SPECIAL stats. Crucially, each SPECIAL point also grants you access to perk cards associated with that attribute. You'll draw perk cards as you level up, and you can equip a certain number of cards for each SPECIAL category.
Perk Cards:
Perk cards are the backbone of your character's build. They provide passive bonuses, active abilities, and special effects. You can equip a limited number of perk cards at any given time, and you can swap them out to adapt to different situations. As you collect duplicate perk cards, you can combine them to create stronger, upgraded versions.
Key Considerations for Your Build:
- Playstyle: Are you a stealthy sniper, a heavy-hitting melee brawler, a charismatic diplomat, or a resourceful scavenger? Your SPECIAL and perk choices should al with your desired playstyle.
- Weapon Choice: Different weapons benefit from different SPECIAL attributes. For example, rifles benefit from Perception, while melee weapons benefit from Strength.
- Team Play: If you plan on playing with others, Charisma becomes more important for buffing your teammates.
- Survival: Endurance and Luck can sificantly improve your survivability by increasing your health, resistances, and loot quality.
Don't be afraid to experiment. You can respec your SPECIAL points and change your perk cards at any time, allowing you to adapt your build as you discover new weapons, armor, and gameplay mechanics. Your character's customization is an ongoing process throughout your journey in Appalachia.
