Radiation & Its Effects

Radiation is an ever-present threat in the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout 76, a lingering consequence of nuclear war and mutated flora and fauna. Exposure to radiation gradually increases your RADS level, leading to detrimental effects that can severely impact your health and combat effectiveness. Managing radiation is a fundamental aspect of survival in Appalachia.

Radiation is encountered from various sources:

  • Irradiated Enemies: Creatures like Ghouls, Scorched, and Mirelurks can inflict radiation damage upon hit.
  • Irradiated Environments: Certain areas, particularly those affected by nuclear fallout (e.g., the Savage Divide, parts of the Morgantown area after a nuke), have high ambient radiation levels.
  • Contaminated Food and Water: Consuming unpurified water or improperly cooked food can lead to radiation exposure.
  • Nuclear Fallout: Detonating a nuclear missile creates a temporary zone of intense radiation.
  • Certain Weapons and Explosives: Some energy weapons and explosives can also inflict radiation damage.

As your RADS level increases, you'll experience a series of negative effects:

  • 1-250 RADS: No immediate effects, but your maximum HP is slightly reduced.
  • 251-500 RADS: Your maximum HP is further reduced, and you may experience minor stat penalties.
  • 501-750 RADS: Sificant reduction in maximum HP, and more severe stat penalties.
  • 751-1000 RADS: Critical reduction in maximum HP, making you extremely vulnerable.
  • 1000+ RADS: Your character will die from radiation poisoning.

Managing Radiation:

Players have several tools at their disposal to combat radiation:

  • Rad-X: This chem provides a temporary boost to your radiation resistance, reducing the amount of RADS you accumulate from environmental sources. It does not remove existing radiation.
  • RadAway: This is the primary method for removing accumulated RADS. Using RadAway will reduce your RADS level, but it also temporarily reduces your radiation resistance.
  • Purified Water and Cooked Food: Consuming these items prevents radiation gain from contaminated sources and is essential for basic survival.
  • Hazmat Suits and Power Armor: Wearing a Hazmat Suit or Power Armor provides sificant radiation resistance, allowing you to traverse highly irradiated areas with less risk.
  • Perks: The Ghoulish perk card can be beneficial, as it allows you to heal from radiation damage, turning a negative into a potential positive. The Adamantium Skeleton perk reduces limb damage, which can indirectly help if radiation causes limb damage.

Strategic Use: It's often more effective to use Rad-X preventatively before entering a highly irradiated zone and then use RadAway after leaving to remove any accumulated RADS. Relying solely on RadAway can be costly in terms of inventory space and ingredient usage.

Understanding and actively managing radiation is a critical survival skill in Fallout 76. By utilizing the right items and perks, you can mitigate its effects and continue your exploration of the irradiated wasteland.
