Caps: The Primary Currency
In the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout 76, Caps are the universal currency, essential for trade, bartering, and acquiring goods from vendors and other players. Understanding how to earn, manage, and spend your Caps is fundamental to thriving in Appalachia.
Caps, short for bottle caps, are the remnants of pre-war soda bottles. They are lightweight and universally accepted, making them the de facto standard for commerce. The maximum amount of Caps a single player can hold is 40,000. Exceeding this limit means any further Caps earned will be lost.
How to Earn Caps:
- Selling to Vendors: The most straightforward way to earn Caps is by selling unwanted items to NPC vendors scattered throughout Appalachia. Each vendor has a daily Cap limit, so visiting multiple vendors is recommended.
- Selling to Other Players: You can set up your C.A.M.P. with vending machines to sell items directly to other players. This allows you to set your own prices and potentially earn more Caps than selling to vendors.
- Completing Quests: Many main story quests, side quests, and daily quests reward you with Caps upon completion.
- Public Events: Participating in public events often yields Cap rewards, especially for successful completion.
- Selling Junk and Resources: While not directly earning Caps, selling excess junk and crafting components to vendors can be a steady source of income.
- Finding Caps Stashes: Occasionally, you'll find hidden Cap Stashes in the world, often marked by a small, brown lockbox.
Where to Spend Caps:
- NPC Vendors: Purchase weapons, armor, ammo, crafting materials, and rare plans from vendors like Samuel at the Foundation, Mortimer at Crater, or the various vendors at Fort Atlas.
- Player Vending Machines: Browse the offerings of other players in their C.A.M.P.s. You can find anything from rare legendary items to common crafting supplies.
- The Purveyor: Located at the Rusty Pick in the Ash Heap, the Purveyor (Murgle) sells legendary weapons and armor in exchange for Legendary Scrip and Caps.
- Atomic Shop (Indirectly): While Atoms are the direct currency for the Atomic Shop, you can earn Atoms through challenges, which indirectly contribute to acquiring shop items.
Managing Your Caps:
- Set Price Goals: When selling items in your vending machine, research what similar items are selling for to avoid over- or under-pricing.
- Invest Wisely: Use your Caps to purchase items that will sificantly improve your build or survival, such as rare plans, powerful weapons, or essential crafting materials.
- Cap Sink Awareness: Be mindful of vendors with high Cap prices for items you might need. It's often more efficient to find these items in the world or craft them yourself if possible.
- Daily Vendor Limits: Remember that NPC vendors have daily Cap limits. Plan your selling routes accordingly.
Caps are the lifeblood of the Appalachian economy. By mastering the art of earning and spending them, you'll find yourself better equipped to tackle the challenges that await you.
