Appalachia, the setting for Fallout 76, is a vast and diverse land, scarred by nuclear war but still holding onto its unique beauty and dangers. The world map is divided into distinct regions, each with its own environment, inhabitants, and secrets waiting to be uncovered.

Navigating Appalachia is a core part of the Fallout 76 experience. The map is large, and understanding the characteristics of each region will help you prepare for the challenges you'll face and find the resources you need. Fast travel is available to discovered locations, but exploring on foot is often the best way to find hidden gems and encounter unique events.

The Five Main Regions:

The Forest: This is the starting region for most players, located in the southeastern part of the map. It's characterized by lush forests, rolling hills, and relatively mild weather. While generally safer than other regions, it's still home to mutated creatures like Radroaches, Mole Rats, and Scorched. Key locations include Vault 76, Flatwoods, and the Charleston Capitol Building.
The Toxic Valley: Situated to the north of The Forest, this region is defined by its irradiated rivers and toxic swamps. The environment is harsher, with more prevalent radiation hazards. Expect to encounter more aggressive creatures and hazardous flora. Locations include Grafton and the Grafton Steel Factory.
The Savage Divide: This mountainous region dominates the central and eastern parts of the map. It's characterized by rugged terrain, deep canyons, and high altitudes. The Savage Divide is home to tougher enemies like Super Mutants and Yao Guai. Key locations include Watoga, The Top of the World, and the National Radio Astronomy Research Center.
The Mire: Located in the northeastern corner of the map, the Mire is a vast, swampy region perpetually shrouded in fog and plagued by acidic rain. It's one of the most dangerous areas, teeming with Mirelurks, Radscorpions, and other mutated horrors. Locations include the Mire and the Abandoned Bog Town.
The Ash Heap: This arid, mountainous region is found in the southwestern part of the map. It's a desolate landscape filled with coal mines, slag heaps, and the remnants of industrial activity. The Ash Heap is known for its Scorched, Mole Miners, and the formidable Scorchbeasts. Key locations include the Charleston Herald and the Hornwright Industrial Headquarters.

Radiation: More prevalent in the Toxic Valley and Ash Heap.
Acidic Rain: A constant threat in The Mire.
