Character Creation & Progression

Your journey in Fallout: New Vegas begins with character creation, a pivotal moment that shapes your entire playthrough. From allocating S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats to choosing your Tag Skills, these initial decisions lay the groundwork for your character's progression and how you'll interact with the Mojave Wasteland.

The first step is allocating points to your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes: Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. Each attribute influences a range of skills and provides passive benefits. For example, high Strength increases your melee damage and carry weight, while high Intelligence boosts your Science and Medicine skills. Consider your desired playstyle when distributing these points. A combat-heavy character might focus on Strength and Endurance, while a diplomat would prioritize Charisma and Intelligence.

After S.P.E.C.I.A.L., you'll choose your Skills. You start with a base distribution, but you'll also select three Tag Skills, which receive an immediate +15 bonus. These skills are crucial for early-game success and define your initial strengths. Common Tag Skills include Guns, Speech, Lockpick, and Science. Think about which skills will best complement your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. build and your intended approach to the game.

you'll gain experience points (XP) by completing quests, defeating enemies, and discovering new locations. Reaching certain XP thresholds will cause you to level up. Each time you level up, you gain Skill Points to distribute among your skills, allowing you to improve your proficiencies. You also get to choose a Perk every two levels (starting at level 2), offering unique abilities and bonuses that can sificantly alter your gameplay.

Progression in Fallout: New Vegas is not solely about leveling up. Your Karma, which tracks your moral alment based on your actions, and your Reputation with various factions also play a crucial role. High Karma can lead to positive NPC reactions and unlock certain quests, while low Karma can make you a pariah. Similarly, your standing with factions like the NCR, Caesar's Legion, and the Great Khans will determine whether they are allies or enemies.

Character Creation Checklist:

  • S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Allocation: Distribute points to Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, Luck.
  • Skill Selection: Choose your initial skill distribution.
  • Tag Skills: Select three skills for a +15 bonus.
