User Interface & Controls
Navigating the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout: New Vegas requires a solid understanding of its user interface (UI) and controls. From managing your inventory to engaging in combat and interacting with the environment, the UI and controls are your primary tools for interacting with the game world. Mastering them will ensure a smoother and more immersive experience.
The Pip-Boy:
Your Pip-Boy is your wrist-mounted computer and your most essential interface. It provides access to:
- Status: Your character's health, radiation levels, hunger/thirst (in Hardcore mode), and limb conditions.
- Inventory: A detailed list of all items you are carrying, including weapons, armor, aid, junk, and quest items. You can equip, drop, or use items from here.
- Map: Displays the explored areas of the Mojave Wasteland, with markers for discovered locations, quest objectives, and fast travel points.
- Data: Access to your character's skills, perks, SPECIAL attributes, and quest logs.
- Radio: Tune into various radio stations to listen to music, news, or quest-related broadcasts.
Heads-Up Display (HUD):
The HUD provides real-time information during gameplay:
- Health Bar: Displays your current health.
- Action Points (AP): Shows your available AP for VATS.
- Crosshair: Your aiming reticle in real-time combat.
- Compass: Indicates the direction of nearby objectives, enemies, and points of interest.
- Ammo Count: Displays the current ammunition in your weapon and your total reserves.
- Quick Slots: Customizable slots for quickly accessing frequently used items or weapons.
Controls (PC Default):
While controls can be customized, here are the common defaults:

Combat Controls:

- VATS (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System): Press 'Q' to enter VATS. This pauses the action, allowing you to target specific enemy body parts. AP is consumed with each targeted action. Successful hits are displayed as percentages.
- Melee/Unarmed: Use left-click to attack. Holding the button may result in a power attack.
- Throwing Weapons: Equip grenades or other thrown items and use left-click to throw.
Dialogue and Interaction:
- Initiating Dialogue: Approach an NPC and press 'E' to interact.
- Dialogue Options: A list of dialogue choices will appear. Your skill levels (Speech, Barter, Science, etc.) and SPECIAL attributes may unlock special options indicated by skill names.
- Skill Checks: Successfully passing a skill check in dialogue can lead to new information, bypass combat, or gain rewards.
Familiarizing yourself with these interfaces and controls will make your journey through the Mojave much more manageable. Take the time to explore the Pip-Boy menus and practice combat maneuvers to ensure you're prepared for whatever the wasteland throws at you.
