Skills

Skills in Fallout: New Vegas are a fundamental aspect of character development, representing your proficiency in various abilities that go beyond raw S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes. These skills determine your effectiveness in combat, your ability to interact with the world, and the number of solutions available to overcome challenges. Investing points wisely into skills is as crucial as allocating your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats.

When you level up, you gain skill points that can be distributed among your 12 skills. Each point increases your skill by 1. The maximum rank for any skill is 100. Certain perks and skill books can provide permanent boosts to your skills, making them even more potent. Understanding the impact of each skill will help you tailor your character to your preferred playstyle, whether you aim to be a master marksman, a silver-tongued diplomat, a cunning thief, or a resourceful survivalist.

The Twelve Skills:

  • Barter: Affects the prices you get when buying and selling items. A higher Barter skill means better deals, saving you caps in the long run.
  • Energy Weapons: Determines your accuracy and damage with energy-based firearms. Essential for users of laser and plasma weapons.
  • Explosives: Influences your effectiveness with grenades, mines, and explosive weapons. Crucial for those who enjoy area-of-effect damage and traps.
  • Guns: Governs your proficiency with conventional firearms, including pistols, rifles, and shotguns. The most common combat skill for many players.
  • Lockpick: Allows you to open locked doors and containers. A higher Lockpick skill increases your chances of success and allows you to pick higher-level locks.
  • Medicine: Affects the effectiveness of Stimpaks, Doctor's Bags, and other medical items, as well as your ability to heal companions. Also influences the outcome of certain medical-related quests.
  • Melee Weapons: Determines your damage with one-handed and two-handed melee weapons. Vital for close-quarters combat enthusiasts.
  • Repair: Allows you to repair your weapons and armor, increasing their durability and effectiveness. Also influences your ability to jury-rig certain devices and quests.
  • Science: Affects your ability to hack computer terminals, craft advanced items at workbenches, and use certain scientific equipment. Opens up many non-combat solutions.
  • Sneak: Influences your ability to move undetected by enemies. A higher Sneak skill is crucial for stealthy gameplay, allowing for surprise attacks and bypassing combat.
  • Speech: Governs your success in dialogue options, allowing you to persuade, intimidate, or lie your way through conversations. Essential for non-violent character builds.
  • Survival: Affects your ability to craft food and chems, resist environmental hazards like poison and radiation, and identify edible plants. Becomes more important in Hardcore Mode.

When creating your character, you'll initially allocate points to your skills based on your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats. For example, higher Intelligence grants more skill points per level. You can also choose a 'Tag Skill' during character creation, which receives an additional 15 points. Prioritize skills that al with your intended playstyle. For a combat-focused character, Guns or Energy Weapons are key. For a diplomatic approach, Speech and Barter are vital. For a stealthy character, Sneak and Lockpick are paramount.
