Enemy Factions & Types

Navigating the Mojave Wasteland means understanding its diverse and often hostile inhabitants. From organized factions to mutated creatures, knowing your enemy is key to survival. This section details common enemy types, their strengths, weaknesses, and effective strategies for dealing with them.

Humanoid Factions

The Mojave is a melting pot of human and near-human groups, each with their own agendas and combat styles. Approaching these encounters requires careful planning, as many can be bypassed or even befriended depending on your reputation and choices.

Caesar's Legion

The Legion operates with brutal efficiency, favoring melee weapons and close-quarters combat, though their Centurions and Praetorians often carry powerful firearms. They are typically found patrolling the eastern side of the Colorado River, including areas like The Fort and Cottonwood Cove.

  • Common Enemies: Legionaries, Prime Legionaries, Centurions, Praetorians.
  • Tactics:
    • Melee Focus: Legionaries often charge with Machetes, Thermic Lances, or Ballistic Fists. Keep your distance and use ranged weapons like the Service Rifle or Hunting Rifle.
    • Armor Piercing: Higher-tier Legionaries wear decent armor. Consider using ammunition like AP (Armor Piercing) rounds for your firearms, or energy weapons like the Laser Rifle or Plasma Rifle.
    • Explosives: A well-placed Frag Grenade or Dynamite can thin out charging groups.
    • Stealth: For solo encounters or ambushes, a high Sneak skill combined with a suppressed weapon like the Silenced .22 Pistol or Sniper Rifle can be devastating.
  • Loot: Legion armor, Machetes, 9mm Pistols, Service Rifles, and occasionally more valuable items from higher-ranking members.

New California Republic (NCR)

While often allies, the NCR can become hostile if your reputation with them drops significantly, or if you attack their personnel. They are well-equipped with standard military gear and firearms, found throughout the western Mojave, including the Mojave Outpost, Camp McCarran, and Camp Forlorn Hope.

  • Common Enemies: NCR Troopers, NCR Rangers, NCR Veteran Rangers.
  • Tactics:
    • Cover: NCR soldiers are proficient with firearms. Use cover extensively and engage from a distance.
    • Headshots: Aim for the head, especially against Rangers who wear formidable armor.
    • Energy Weapons: Their combat armor is less resistant to energy damage. A Recharger Rifle or Gatling Laser can be effective.
    • Disarm: A high Guns skill with the "Disarm" perk can knock weapons out of their hands, especially useful against powerful foes like Veteran Rangers.
  • Loot: NCR Trooper Armor, Service Rifles, 9mm Submachine Guns, and the highly sought-after Ranger Combat Armor and Anti-Materiel Rifle from Veteran Rangers.

Fiends

These chem-addicted raiders are found primarily in the areas surrounding Vault 3 and the South Vegas Ruins. They are numerous, aggressive, and often carry a mix of improvised and standard weapons.

  • Common Enemies: Fiends, Psycho Fiends, Violent Fiends, Motor-Runner.
  • Tactics:
    • Overwhelm: Fiends often attack in large groups. Use area-of-effect weapons like the Grenade Rifle or Missile Launcher to thin their ranks.
    • Crippling: Aim for their legs to slow their charge, making them easier targets.
    • Chems: Don't be afraid to use your own chems like Jet or Psycho to gain an edge in tough fights.
    • Environmental Hazards: Lure them into traps or use explosive barrels found in their camps.
  • Loot: Improvised weapons, low-tier firearms, various chems (Jet, Psycho, Mentats), and occasionally unique weapons from named Fiends like Motor-Runner's Helmet.

Mutated Creatures

The Wasteland is home to a plethora of mutated wildlife, ranging from annoying pests to terrifying apex predators. Each presents a unique challenge.

Radscorpions

These giant scorpions are a common threat throughout the Mojave, particularly in rocky areas and caves like Scorpion Gulch. They are fast, heavily armored, and their sting can inflict poison.

  • Types: Radscorpion, Giant Radscorpion, Albino Radscorpion, Bark Scorpion.
  • Tactics:
    • Legs: Their legs are their weakest point. Crippling them will significantly reduce their speed and attack frequency.
    • Armor Piercing: Their carapace offers significant damage resistance. Use AP rounds or high-damage energy weapons.
    • Poison Antidote: Always carry Antivenom or Healing Powder to counter their poison.
    • Melee Strategy: If using melee, circle strafe to avoid their stinger attacks.
  • Loot: Radscorpion Poison Gland, Radscorpion Meat.

Deathclaws

The most feared creatures in the Mojave, Deathclaws are incredibly fast, powerful, and heavily armored. They are found in dangerous locations such as Quarry Junction, Dead Wind Cavern, and the Deathclaw Promontory. Avoid these areas at low levels.

  • Types: Deathclaw, Alpha Male, Mother Deathclaw, Legendary Deathclaw.
  • Tactics:
    • Crippling Legs: This is paramount. A crippled Deathclaw is still dangerous but manageable. Use a high-damage weapon like the Anti-Materiel Rifle with explosive rounds, or a Fat Man.
    • Traps & Mines: Laying a field of Bottlecap Mines or Plasma Mines can soften them up before engagement.
    • High Ground: If possible, engage from an elevated position they cannot reach.
    • Companions: Companions like Lily or Raul (with his "Full Maintenance" perk) can draw aggro, buying you precious time.
    • Stealth Boy: A Stealth Boy can help you sneak past them, but engaging them while invisible is risky as they can still detect you at close range.
  • Loot: Deathclaw Hand, Deathclaw Meat.

Cazadores

These giant, mutated wasps are fast, fly erratically, and their sting carries a potent poison. They are common in the central and northern Mojave, including areas like Bonnie Springs.

  • Types: Cazador, Young Cazador, Giant Cazador, Legendary Cazador.
  • Tactics:
    • VATS: Their erratic flight makes them hard to hit. Use V.A.T.S. to target their wings, crippling them and forcing them to the ground.
    • Shotguns: A Riot Shotgun or Lever-Action Shotgun is effective at close range due to their spread.
    • Explosives: A well-timed Frag Grenade can take out multiple Cazadores if they swarm.
    • Antivenom: Crucial for survival. Always have plenty on hand.
  • Loot: Cazador Poison Gland, Cazador Egg.

Robots

Pre-War automatons still roam the wasteland, often guarding old facilities or acting as security. They are generally resistant to conventional firearms but vulnerable to energy weapons and EMP-based attacks.

  • Common Enemies: Protectron, Sentry Bot, Mr. Gutsy, Robobrain, Securitron.
  • Tactics:
    • Energy Weapons: Plasma and Laser weapons are highly effective. The Plasma Caster or Tri-Beam Laser Rifle can quickly dismantle them.
    • EMP Grenades: Pulse Grenades and Pulse Mines are devastating against robots, often disabling them instantly.
    • Explosives: High-damage explosives like C4 Plastic Explosives or the Missile Launcher can also work.
    • Targeting Limbs: Aim for their combat inhibitors or optical sensors to disable their attacks or blind them.
  • Loot: Scrap Metal, Sensor Modules, Energy Cells, Microfusion Cells, and occasionally unique robot parts.
