Perk Categories & Recommendations
Perks are powerful passive abilities and active bonuses that sificantly shape your character's capabilities and playstyle in Fallout: New Vegas. Gained every two levels (or through specific quests and challenges), choosing the right perks is crucial for optimizing your build and overcoming the Mojave's many challenges. Understanding the categories and their benefits will help you make informed decisions.
Perks can be broadly categorized based on their primary function, though many offer benefits that cross over into multiple areas. These categories help in planning a cohesive character build.
Combat Perks: These perks directly enhance your effectiveness in firefights and melee engagements.
- Bloody Mess: Increases gore and provides a small damage bonus. A fun, if not essential, perk.
- Gunslinger/Gunslinger: Boosts critical hit chance with one-handed and two-handed firearms, respectively. Essential for VATS builds.
- Finesse: Increases critical hit chance with all weapons. Excellent for any build that relies on criticals.
- The Professional: Increases sneak attack critical damage with pistols, SMGs, and knives. Great for stealthy characters.
- Cowboy: Boosts damage with revolvers, lever-action weapons, and dynamite.
- Rifleman/Toughness: Increases damage with certain weapon types or provides damage resistance.
