Once your basic resource needs are met, focus on optimizing room placement and upgrades to create powerful synergies that maximize efficiency and defense. Strategic room arrangement can drastically reduce dweller travel time and improve your vault's response to threats.
Kill Corridors: The most effective defensive strategy involves creating "kill corridors." Place your most vital resource-producing rooms (Power, Food, Water) on the top levels, directly below the Vault Door. Fully upgrade these rooms and staff them with your best-armed dwellers. When Raiders attack, they will appear at the Vault Door and be forced to travel through these upgraded rooms, where they will encounter heavily armed dwellers, giving you a sificant advantage.
Adjacent Room Bonuses: While not explicitly stated as a mechanic, players have observed that placing identical rooms adjacent to each other and then upgrading them to a larger, combined room can sometimes lead to more efficient production. For example, merging three Level 1 Power Generators into a single Level 2 Power Generator, and then into a Level 3, often yields better results than keeping them as separate, smaller rooms.
Resource Production Chains: Consider the flow of resources. Placing your Power Generators and Nuclear Reactors on higher levels can help power rooms on lower levels more effectively, assuming power distribution is a factor in your strategy. Training Room Placement: Group your training rooms together. This allows you to easily monitor dweller progress and reass them as needed. Placing them near living quarters can also reduce travel time for dwellers undergoing training.
Crafting Hubs: Consolidate your Weapon Workshop and Outfit Workshop. This makes it easier to manage your crafting queue and ass dwellers with high Intelligence and Agility to these vital rooms for the production of powerful gear.
