Skills & Skill Progression
In Fallout Tactics, your squad's effectiveness hinges on intelligent skill allocation. Unlike previous Fallout titles, this game is heavily combat-focused, meaning combat skills take precedence. While some utility skills are valuable, you'll want to specialize your recruits to maximize their combat potential.
Understanding Skill Points
Each time a character gains a level, they receive a number of skill points to distribute. The amount of skill points received is directly influenced by their Intelligence (INT) attribute. A higher INT means more points per level, allowing for faster skill development. For your main character and key specialists, aim for an INT of 6 or higher at character creation.
Key Combat Skills and Specialization
Focusing on a few core combat skills for each squad member is crucial. Trying to make a "jack of all trades" will result in a squad that is mediocre at everything and master of nothing. Here's a breakdown of essential combat skills and recommended specializations:
- Small Guns: This is the bread and butter of early to mid-game combat. Every squad member, especially your main character, should have a decent investment here.
- Actionable Step: For your initial recruits, aim to get Small Guns to at least 100% by level 6-8. This allows for reliable hits with weapons like the M3A1 "Grease Gun" and the FN FAL.
- Item Focus: Early game, prioritize the 10mm Pistol and M3A1 "Grease Gun." As you progress, the FN FAL and M14 become excellent choices for Small Guns specialists.
- Big Guns: Essential for heavy weapon users, providing suppressive fire and dealing massive damage.
- Actionable Step: Designate one or two squad members as Big Guns specialists. Prioritize getting this skill to 120% or higher for optimal accuracy with weapons like the M60 and Browning M2.
- Strategy: Big Guns users often have lower Action Points (AP) due to weapon weight. Consider giving them the "Bonus Rate of Fire" perk to maximize their damage output per turn.
- Energy Weapons: Becomes vital in the late game as you encounter heavily armored enemies.
- Actionable Step: Start investing in Energy Weapons around the mid-game (missions like "Springfield" or "Junction") for one or two dedicated specialists. Aim for 120%+ by the late game.
- Item Focus: The Laser Rifle is a solid early energy weapon, but strive for the Plasma Rifle and eventually the Gatling Laser for maximum effectiveness.
- Melee Weapons / Unarmed: While less critical than ranged combat, a dedicated melee character can be surprisingly effective for flanking or dealing with close-quarters threats.
- Actionable Step: If you choose a melee specialist, prioritize this skill to 150%+ and pair it with high Strength (STR) and Agility (AGI).
- Strategy: Equip your melee character with a Super Sledge or Power Fist for devastating attacks. Consider the "Slayer" perk for significant damage bonuses.
Essential Utility Skills
While combat reigns supreme, certain utility skills are indispensable for mission success. These should be distributed among your squad, ensuring you have at least one specialist for each.
- First Aid / Doctor: Absolutely critical for keeping your squad alive.
- Actionable Step: Designate one character as your primary medic and raise their First Aid to 100% and Doctor to 80% as early as possible. This allows them to effectively use Healing Powders, First Aid Kits, and Doctor's Bags.
- Item Focus: Always carry a plentiful supply of Healing Powders and First Aid Kits. Doctor's Bags are rarer but essential for healing critical injuries.
- Outdoorsman: Reduces the chance of random encounters on the world map, saving you time and resources.
- Actionable Step: Assign one character to be your Outdoorsman specialist. Aim for 100% to significantly reduce encounter rates. This skill doesn't need to be maxed immediately but should be steadily increased.
- Repair: Crucial for maintaining your weapons and armor, especially later in the game when advanced gear starts to degrade.
- Actionable Step: Have one character focus on Repair, aiming for 100% by the mid-game. This allows them to repair damaged items using Tool Kits and Super Tool Kits.
- Strategy: Regularly check your squad's equipment for damage in the inventory screen (indicated by a red bar). Repairing items before they break completely is more efficient.
- Traps: Essential for disarming enemy traps and setting your own.
- Actionable Step: Dedicate one character to Traps, aiming for 80-100%. This is particularly useful in missions with minefields or booby-trapped areas.
- Location Tip: Missions like "Preoria" and "St. Louis" often feature numerous traps that a skilled Traps specialist can disarm for valuable experience and loot.
Skills to Generally Avoid (or keep low)
Due to the combat-centric nature of Fallout Tactics, some skills offer minimal benefit or can be covered by other means:
- Speech: Has almost no impact on the game's progression or outcomes. Keep it at base level.
- Barter: While useful for getting better prices, the financial gains are often negligible compared to the combat advantage gained from investing in other skills. Keep it low, or rely on a high Charisma character for slightly better prices if you have one.
- Gambling: Purely for minigames, offers no tactical advantage. Avoid entirely.
- Steal: Not practical in a squad-based tactical game. Avoid.
Skill Books and Trainers
Keep an eye out for Skill Books and opportunities to train your skills. These are invaluable for boosting specific skills without spending precious skill points:
- Skill Books: These items, when used, permanently increase a specific skill. They are often found as mission rewards or loot.
- Example: A "Guns and Bullets" magazine will increase your Small Guns skill. "First Aid Manuals" boost First Aid.
- Strategy: Save skill books for characters who are already specializing in that skill to push them to even higher levels, or to give a slight boost to a secondary skill.
- Trainers: Occasionally, you'll encounter NPCs who can train your skills for a fee.
- Actionable Step: In the Brotherhood Bunker, the Quartermaster can sometimes offer training in combat skills. Always check for these opportunities, especially for skills you're struggling to raise.
By carefully planning your skill progression and specializing your squad members, you'll create an unstoppable Brotherhood force capable of overcoming any challenge the wastes throw at you.
