Mission 16: Coldwater

Welcome to Coldwater, a mission that demands careful planning and execution. This area is heavily guarded by Super Mutants, and you'll need to navigate treacherous terrain while managing your resources. Stealth and ranged combat are your best friends here.

Squad Composition & Preparation

For this mission, a balanced squad is crucial. Consider bringing:

  • Heavy Weapons Specialist: Equipped with a Rocket Launcher or a Minigun for dealing with groups of Super Mutants and their heavy armor.
  • Sniper: Essential for picking off targets from a distance and thinning out enemy patrols before they get too close. A high Perception and a scoped rifle (e.g., M1 Garand with scope, Sniper Rifle) are key.
  • Scout/Spotter: Someone with high Outdoorsman and Perception to detect enemies early. Consider giving them a silenced weapon for stealth kills if possible.
  • Medic: To keep your team alive and well. Super Mutants hit hard, so healing will be frequent.

Ensure everyone has ample ammunition for their primary weapons, a few Stimpaks, and perhaps some RadAway, as there might be irradiated areas.

Initial Approach & Northern Sector

You'll start at the southern edge of the map. Your immediate goal is to clear the northern section, which often contains several Super Mutant patrols.

  1. Advance Cautiously: Move your scout ahead of the main group, using the terrain for cover. Stick to the eastern side of the map initially, as it offers more concealment.
  2. Engage First Patrol: You'll likely encounter a small patrol of 2-3 Super Mutants near the northern-most building on the eastern side. Use your sniper to initiate combat, focusing on headshots. Follow up with your heavy weapons specialist if they get too close.
  3. Clear the Northern Buildings: Systematically clear the buildings in the northern sector. Inside these structures, you may find:
    • Building 1 (Northeast): Often contains a footlocker with .50 Cal Ammo and a few Stimpaks.
    • Building 2 (North-Central): Look for a desk that might hold a Plasma Rifle and some Small Energy Cells.

Central Area & Main Compound

The central area is more open and heavily defended. This is where your heavy weapons will shine.

  1. Approach from the East: Once the northern sector is clear, move your squad towards the central compound from the eastern side. This approach often provides better cover and a slight elevation advantage.
  2. Eliminate Heavy Resistance: Expect several Super Mutants, including some armed with Miniguns or Rocket Launchers, guarding the main entrance and patrolling the central courtyard. Prioritize targets:
    • Rocket Launcher Mutants: Take these out first to prevent devastating area-of-effect damage.
    • Minigun Mutants: Their sustained fire can quickly down your squad. Use concentrated fire.
  3. Secure the Main Building: The largest building in the center of the compound is your primary objective. It's usually swarming with Super Mutants.
    • Breach and Clear: Use grenades or a well-placed rocket to open up the entrance if necessary. Send in your most durable squad members first, followed by those with high damage output.
    • Loot the Commander's Office: On the second floor of the main building, you'll find the Super Mutant Commander. After defeating him, search his desk for the Coldwater Facility Keycard, which is vital for accessing later areas. You might also find a high-tier weapon like a Turbo Plasma Rifle here.

Underground Access & Final Objective

With the keycard in hand, you can now access the underground section.

  1. Locate the Hatch: The entrance to the underground facility is typically a floor hatch located within the main central building, often in a back room or near the commander's office.
  2. Descent into Darkness: The underground area is a series of narrow corridors and rooms. Super Mutants here are often in tighter formations, making grenades and burst fire effective.
  3. Deactivate the Generator: Your ultimate objective is to deactivate the primary power generator. This is usually located in the deepest part of the underground complex.
    • Generator Room: Expect heavy resistance in the generator room itself. Position your squad to create a kill zone at the entrance.
    • Interaction: Once the room is clear, have a character with a high Science skill interact with the main generator console to shut it down. If no one has high Science, a character with Repair might also be able to jury-rig a shutdown, though it might take longer.

Mission Completion

Once the generator is deactivated, the mission will conclude. Before exiting, ensure you've thoroughly looted all areas, especially the Super Mutant bodies, for valuable gear and ammunition. Coldwater is a tough fight, but with careful planning and tactical execution, your Brotherhood squad will prevail.
