Mission 7: Springfield (Part 2)
Welcome back, initiates! This section picks up where we left off in Springfield, focusing on the latter half of this challenging mission. The goal remains to neutralize the Super Mutant threat and secure the area. Expect heavy resistance and make sure your squad is well-equipped and healed.
Clearing the Northern Sector
From the central plaza where you likely encountered the first wave of Super Mutants, head north. This area is characterized by several ruined buildings and a small park. Super Mutants often patrol in groups of two or three, so maintain tactical awareness.
- Building to the Northwest: Approach cautiously. Inside, you'll often find a Super Mutant Brute armed with a Light Machine Gun. Prioritize taking him down with concentrated fire. Check the shelves and crates for a Stimpak and possibly some .50 Caliber Ammo.
- Park Area: The small park often contains a Super Mutant wielding a Rocket Launcher. This is a high-priority target due to its area-of-effect damage. Use a scout to draw its fire, then flank with your heavy weapons specialist. There's usually a small cache near a broken statue with a Frag Grenade or two.
- Eastern Building (Northern Sector): This building provides good cover and a vantage point. Expect 1-2 Super Mutants inside. After clearing, search the back room for a locker containing a Combat Shotgun and several boxes of Shotgun Shells. This can be a valuable addition for close-quarters combat.
The Western Residential Block
Once the northern sector is relatively clear, turn your attention to the western side of the map. This area consists of several residential structures, many of which are heavily damaged. Super Mutants here tend to be more spread out but can ambush from unexpected angles.
- First House (Western Edge): As you move west, the first intact house on your left often holds a Super Mutant Guard. He's typically armed with a Hunting Rifle. Use cover and engage from a distance. Inside, on a table, you might find a First Aid Kit and a few doses of Jet.
- Central Western Building: This larger structure is a common patrol route for a Super Mutant Master. These are tougher variants, often carrying heavy weapons like a Minigun. Focus fire on him, using your most powerful weapons. After the fight, check the collapsed floor for a hidden compartment containing a Plasma Rifle and a handful of Small Energy Cells. This is a significant upgrade if you have an energy weapon specialist.
- Southernmost Western House: This house, near the edge of the map, sometimes has a lone Super Mutant. He's usually a standard Super Mutant with a Pipe Rifle. Clear him out and search the bedroom for a RadAway and some 9mm Ammo.
Final Push: The Super Mutant Stronghold
The main objective of this mission is to eliminate the Super Mutant leader, who is typically found in the most fortified structure, usually towards the southwestern part of the map. This will be your toughest engagement yet.
- Approach Strategy: Do not rush in. Use your scout to identify enemy positions. There will be multiple Super Mutants guarding the entrance, including at least one with a Rocket Launcher and several with heavy machine guns. Consider using smoke grenades to obscure their line of sight or frag grenades to soften them up before engaging.
- Exterior Guards: Take out the exterior guards one by one. Prioritize the Rocket Launcher mutant. Use snipers to pick off targets from a distance if possible. There's often a sandbagged position that offers good cover for your heavy weapons specialist.
- Inside the Stronghold: The interior is usually a tight, multi-room layout. The Super Mutant leader, often a Super Mutant Overlord, will be heavily armored and armed with a powerful weapon like a Flamer or a Gatling Laser. He will also have 1-2 Super Mutant guards with him.
- Tactics: Focus all available fire on the Overlord. Use burst fire or aimed shots to maximize damage. If you have a character with high Melee Weapons skill, a well-placed Power Fist attack can be devastating. Be prepared to use Stimpaks liberally.
- Looting the Leader: Upon defeating the Overlord, loot his body. He will drop his primary weapon (e.g., Gatling Laser, Flamer) and often a significant amount of ammunition for it. You might also find a Super Stimpak or other valuable consumables.
- Post-Combat Search: After the leader is down, thoroughly search the stronghold. There are usually several lockers and crates containing valuable items such as Micro Fusion Cells, Energy Cells, more Stimpaks, and occasionally a unique weapon or armor piece like a Brotherhood Combat Armor or a Laser Rifle.
Once the Super Mutant leader is defeated and the area is secured, the mission should conclude. Remember to heal your squad, repair any damaged equipment, and manage your inventory before heading back to the bunker. Good luck, initiate!
