Character Customization
While Rex "Power" Colt is a man of singular purpose and unyielding resolve, the world of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon offers a surprisingly robust, albeit subtly integrated, system for customizing his abilities and appearance. Unlike traditional RPGs with extensive gear menus, customization in Blood Dragon focuses on enhancing Rex's inherent cybernetic capabilities and providing cosmetic flair through weapon skins. Mastering these options will turn Rex from a formidable Mark IV Cyber Commando into an unstoppable force.
Cybernetic Enhancements (Skills)
Rex's primary form of "character customization" comes through his skill progression. As you complete missions, eliminate enemies, and collect collectibles, Rex gains experience points (XP). Accumulating enough XP will level Rex up, automatically unlocking new abilities and passive buffs. There's no skill tree to navigate; instead, Rex's enhancements are pre-determined and automatically applied, making him progressively more powerful as you play.
- Health Upgrades: Early levels will significantly boost Rex's maximum health, allowing him to withstand more damage from Omega Force soldiers and even the mighty Blood Dragons.
- Melee Damage Boosts: As you progress, Rex's already potent cybernetic punch will become even more devastating, often allowing for one-hit takedowns on standard enemies.
- Weapon Handling Improvements: Expect enhancements to reload speed, weapon stability, and accuracy for all weapon types, making combat smoother and more efficient.
- Stealth Perks: Later levels might grant Rex improved stealth capabilities, such as reduced detection range or quieter movement, aiding in infiltration missions.
- Special Abilities: Keep an eye out for unique abilities like increased sprint duration or faster healing, which significantly impact gameplay.
The key strategy here is simply to engage with all aspects of the game: complete main story missions, tackle side quests (Hostage Situations, Garrison Liberations), and diligently hunt down collectibles like TV Sets and VHS Tapes. Every action contributes to Rex's growth, making him a more effective killing machine.
Weapon Customization (Skins)
While Rex's core abilities are automatically upgraded, you do have direct control over the aesthetic of his arsenal. Weapon skins are purely cosmetic and do not affect weapon performance, but they allow you to personalize your loadout with some truly radical 80s-inspired designs.
To access weapon skins:
- Pause the game and navigate to the "Weapons" menu.
- Select the weapon you wish to customize (e.g., the Fazertron, Kobracon, or Flamethrower).
- If available, an option for "Skins" will appear. Select this to browse your unlocked options.
- Choose your desired skin and apply it.
How to Unlock Weapon Skins:
- Mission Rewards: Certain main story missions or side quests will reward you with exclusive weapon skins upon completion. Pay attention to mission briefings for potential cosmetic rewards.
- Collectible Completion: Successfully finding all of a particular type of collectible (e.g., all TV Sets in a specific sector) might unlock a themed weapon skin.
- Garrison Liberations: Liberating all Garrisons on the island can sometimes yield unique weapon skins as a reward for your efforts.
- Hidden Secrets: Keep an eye out for obscure secrets or challenges; some of the most outlandish skins are tied to these. For example, completing all "Hunter" side quests might unlock a special skin for the Bow.
Experiment with different skins to find the look that best suits your personal brand of cybernetic mayhem. While they won't make you stronger, looking good while dismembering Omega Force soldiers is half the battle, right?
