Reputation & Allies

Building your reputation and recruiting allies are crucial for surviving and liberating Hope County from the tyrannical grip of the Project at Eden's Gate. This section details how to earn Resistance Points, unlock powerful Guns for Hire (GFH), and maximize their effectiveness in combat.

Earning Resistance Points (RP)

Resistance Points are your primary measure of progress in each region. Accumulating enough RP will trigger story missions and eventually confront the regional Heralds. There are several ways to earn RP:

  • Completing Story Missions: These are the main quests that advance the narrative and provide significant RP bonuses.
  • Completing Side Missions: Look for exclamation marks on your map and talk to NPCs with a "!" above their heads. These missions offer varied rewards, including RP. For example, in Holland Valley, completing "Man's Best Friend" to recruit Boomer or "Grace Under Fire" to recruit Grace Armstrong will grant RP.
  • Liberating Outposts: Clearing Peggie outposts is a highly effective way to earn RP. Each outpost liberated contributes to the region's resistance meter. A stealthy approach often yields bonus RP.
  • Destroying Cult Property: Look for and destroy various cult assets, such as:
    • Shrines: Often found in remote areas or near cult strongholds.
    • Propaganda Towers: Easily identifiable by their red banners and loudspeakers.
    • Bliss Containers: Particularly prevalent in Faith's region, these large, glowing containers can be destroyed with explosives or gunfire.
  • Rescuing Civilians: Keep an eye out for civilians being harassed or held captive by Peggies. Intervening and saving them will grant a small amount of RP.
  • Destroying Roadblocks: Roadblocks are common on major roads. Clearing them out not only earns RP but also makes travel safer.

Guns for Hire (GFH)

Guns for Hire are specialized allies with unique skills that can turn the tide of battle. You can have up to two GFH active at any given time once you unlock the "Leadership" perk (available for 6 perk points). Each region has specific GFH that you'll unlock through story progression or side missions.

Recruiting Specialized GFH

These allies have unique abilities and backstories. Prioritize recruiting them as soon as possible:

  1. Boomer (Holland Valley):
    • How to Recruit: Complete the side mission "Man's Best Friend." Head to the Rae-Rae's Pumpkin Farm in Holland Valley. You'll find a distressed civilian who will give you the mission to rescue Boomer from the cultists.
    • Ability: Marks enemies and retrieves weapons. Invaluable for stealth and identifying threats.
    • Strategy: Send Boomer ahead to scout outposts. He'll tag enemies, allowing you to plan your attack or execute stealth takedowns more effectively.
  2. Grace Armstrong (Holland Valley):
    • How to Recruit: Complete the side mission "Grace Under Fire." You'll find Grace at the Fillmore's Residence, under attack by cultists. Defend her and the residence.
    • Ability: Sniper support. Provides covering fire and takes out high-priority targets from a distance.
    • Strategy: Position Grace on high ground overlooking an engagement. She's excellent for eliminating snipers, heavy gunners, or alarm operators before you engage.
  3. Jess Black (Jacob's Region):
    • How to Recruit: Complete the side mission "A Right to Bear Arms." You'll find Jess at the Baron Lumber Mill.
    • Ability: Stealth bow hunter. Excels at silent takedowns and setting traps.
    • Strategy: Jess is perfect for stealthy outpost liberations. Send her in first to thin out enemy numbers silently.
  4. Hurk Drubman Jr. (Jacob's Region):
    • How to Recruit: Complete the side mission "The Prodigal Son." You'll find Hurk near the Fort Drubman area.
    • Ability: Rocket launcher specialist. Excellent for destroying vehicles and heavily armored enemies.
    • Strategy: When facing convoys, armored vehicles, or large groups of enemies, Hurk is your go-to. Just be mindful of friendly fire!
  5. Nick Rye (Holland Valley):
    • How to Recruit: Complete the side mission "Wingman." You'll find Nick at his airstrip, under attack.
    • Ability: Air support with his plane, "The Carmina." Provides strafing runs and bomb drops.
    • Strategy: Call in Nick for large-scale engagements, particularly against vehicles or fortified positions. He can clear out entire areas quickly.
  6. Sharky Boshaw (Faith's Region):
    • How to Recruit: Complete the side mission "Burn Baby Burn." You'll find Sharky at the Moonflower Trailer Park.
    • Ability: Flamethrower expert. Great for crowd control and destroying cover.
    • Strategy: Sharky excels in close-quarters combat and against swarms of enemies, especially the Bliss-addled cultists in Faith's region.
  7. Adelaide Drubman (Faith's Region):
    • How to Recruit: Complete the side mission "Friendly Skies." You'll find Adelaide at the Drubman Marina.
    • Ability: Helicopter support. Provides aerial cover and can transport you.
    • Strategy: Adelaide is fantastic for quick travel, aerial assaults, and extracting from sticky situations.
  8. Cheeseburger (Jacob's Region):
    • How to Recruit: Complete the side mission "Fangs for Hire: Cheeseburger." You'll find Cheeseburger at the F.A.N.G. Center.
    • Ability: Tanky bear companion. Draws enemy fire and deals heavy melee damage.
    • Strategy: Send Cheeseburger in first to distract enemies, allowing you to flank or pick them off. He's incredibly resilient.
  9. Peaches (Faith's Region):
    • How to Recruit: Complete the side mission "Fangs for Hire: Peaches." You'll find Peaches at the Peaches Taxidermy.
    • Ability: Stealthy cougar companion. Excellent for silent takedowns and ambushes.
    • Strategy: Similar to Jess, Peaches is ideal for stealth operations. She can silently eliminate enemies without raising an alarm.

Generic Guns for Hire

Beyond the specialized GFH, you can also recruit generic Resistance members found throughout Hope County. These allies have various weapon types (riflemen, bowmen, heavy gunners) and can be useful for adding extra firepower. Simply approach them and press the interaction button to recruit them. While less specialized, they can still provide valuable distractions and damage output, especially early in the game.

Maximizing Ally Effectiveness

  • Issue Commands: Use the GFH command wheel (default 'Q' on PC, D-Pad on console) to direct your allies. You can tell them to attack specific targets, move to a location, or stay put.
  • Revive Your Allies: If an ally goes down, you have a limited time to revive them. Prioritize this, as losing a GFH can significantly impact your combat effectiveness.
  • Choose Wisely: Select GFH that complement your playstyle and the mission at hand. For a stealth approach, Boomer and Jess are excellent. For direct assaults, Hurk and Cheeseburger are invaluable.
  • Perks: Invest perk points into GFH-related perks like "Leadership" to bring a second GFH, or "Journeyman" and "Master" to reduce GFH cooldowns.
  • Vehicle Buddies: GFH will automatically hop into your vehicle, providing covering fire. This is especially useful for Hurk, who can devastate pursuing vehicles with his rocket launcher.
