Endings Guide

Far Cry 5 offers players three distinct endings, two of which are considered "main" endings and one a "secret" or "alternate" ending. Your choices, particularly at the very beginning and the very end of the game, will determine which path you take. This guide will walk you through how to achieve each outcome.

The Secret Ending: Walk Away

This ending can be achieved within the first 10-15 minutes of gameplay, making it the quickest way to conclude your journey in Hope County. It requires a specific action during the very first mission.

  • Location: Dutch's Island, during the initial arrest of Joseph Seed.
  • Walkthrough Steps:
    1. After the opening cinematic, you and your fellow deputies (Sheriff Whitehorse, Deputy Hudson, and Deputy Pratt) will enter the church to arrest Joseph Seed.
    2. Proceed through the initial dialogue and cutscenes as instructed.
    3. When you are given the prompt to "Arrest Joseph Seed" and are standing directly in front of him, do not interact with him.
    4. Instead, simply wait. Do not press the interaction button (typically 'E' on PC, 'Square' on PlayStation, 'X' on Xbox).
    5. After approximately 1-2 minutes of inaction, Sheriff Whitehorse will state, "We're leaving. We're not arresting him."
    6. A final cutscene will play, and the credits will roll, concluding the game.
  • Outcome: The deputies leave Hope County, Joseph Seed remains free, and the cult continues its operations. This ending offers a stark commentary on the futility of intervention.

The Main Endings: Confronting The Father

These two endings occur after you have liberated all three regions of Hope County from Joseph Seed's Heralds: John Seed, Faith Seed, and Jacob Seed. Once all three Heralds are defeated, you will be automatically pulled into the final confrontation with Joseph Seed at his compound.

  • Prerequisites:
    • Complete all main story missions in John Seed's Region, culminating in his defeat.
    • Complete all main story missions in Faith Seed's Region, culminating in her defeat.
    • Complete all main story missions in Jacob Seed's Region, culminating in his defeat.
  • Location: Joseph Seed's Compound, near the large cross.
  • Final Mission: "Where It All Began"

Ending 1: Resist

This is the more action-oriented and traditional ending, where you choose to fight against Joseph Seed's influence.

  • Walkthrough Steps:
    1. After defeating all three Heralds, you will be captured and brought before Joseph Seed at his compound.
    2. During the final confrontation, Joseph will offer you a choice: "Walk Away" or "Resist."
    3. Choose "Resist." This will trigger a massive firefight against Joseph's remaining cultists, including your captured allies who are under the influence of the Bliss.
    4. You must defeat waves of cultists and rescue your allies (Sheriff Whitehorse, Deputy Hudson, and Deputy Pratt) by shooting them with non-lethal takedowns or specific weapons if available, or simply surviving until they are no longer hostile.
    5. After a prolonged battle, you will eventually subdue Joseph Seed.
    6. A final cutscene will play, depicting the immediate aftermath of the conflict and a shocking twist involving a nuclear attack.
  • Outcome: The Deputy, Joseph, and a few others survive the nuclear apocalypse, leading to a grim and uncertain future. This is considered the canonical ending that leads into Far Cry New Dawn.

Ending 2: Walk Away (Main Game)

This ending, while still occurring at the game's climax, offers a different resolution to the conflict with Joseph Seed.

  • Walkthrough Steps:
    1. After defeating all three Heralds, you will be captured and brought before Joseph Seed at his compound.
    2. During the final confrontation, Joseph will offer you a choice: "Walk Away" or "Resist."
    3. Choose "Walk Away."
    4. Joseph will then release you and your allies.
    5. You and the deputies will get into a vehicle and attempt to drive away from the compound.
    6. A final cutscene will play, depicting your escape and a sudden, unexpected turn of events.
  • Outcome: As you drive away, the radio begins playing "Only You" (a song associated with Jacob Seed's conditioning), and the Deputy, under its influence, attacks the other deputies. The screen fades to black, implying the Deputy succumbs to the conditioning and kills their allies, becoming another one of Joseph's "chosen."
