Co-op & Multiplayer
Yara is a vast and dangerous island, and sometimes, a little help goes a long way. Far Cry 6 offers a robust co-op experience, allowing you to team up with a friend to liberate the nation from Antón Castillo's oppressive regime. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to dive into multiplayer action, from initiating a session to maximizing your effectiveness as a duo.
Initiating a Co-op Session
Getting started with co-op is straightforward, but there are a few prerequisites to keep in mind:
- Complete the Prologue: Before you can invite or join another player, you must first complete the game's prologue. This involves escaping Isla Santuario and reaching the main island of Yara, specifically the first Guerilla Camp. Once you've established your presence and met Clara Garcia, the co-op option will unlock.
- Stable Internet Connection: Both players will need a stable internet connection to participate in online co-op.
- Platform Compatibility: Far Cry 6 supports cross-generation play (e.g., PS4 with PS5, Xbox One with Xbox Series X/S), but not cross-platform play (e.g., PlayStation with Xbox or PC). Ensure you and your friend are on compatible platforms.
How to Invite a Friend
- Open the Main Menu: While in-game, press the appropriate button to open the main menu (e.g., Options on PlayStation, Menu on Xbox, Esc on PC).
- Navigate to the Co-op Tab: Look for the "Co-op" tab. It's usually represented by an icon of two people.
- Select "Play With a Friend": Within the Co-op tab, choose the "Play With a Friend" option.
- Choose Your Friend: A list of your online friends will appear. Select the friend you wish to invite.
- Send Invitation: An invitation will be sent to your friend. Once they accept, they will join your game session.
How to Join a Friend's Game
If your friend has invited you, you'll receive a notification. Simply accept the invitation to join their session. Alternatively, if your friend has set their game to "Open to Friends" (see below), you can:
- Open the Main Menu.
- Navigate to the Co-op Tab.
- Select "Join a Friend": If a friend is playing and their session is open, their name will appear here. Select them to join.
Co-op Session Settings
Before or during a co-op session, you can adjust your privacy settings:
- Main Menu > Co-op > Co-op Settings
- Privacy:
- Open to Friends: Allows any friend to join your session without an explicit invitation.
- Invite Only: Only players you specifically invite can join your session. This is the default setting.
- Offline: Disables co-op entirely.
Co-op Gameplay Mechanics and Strategies
Playing Far Cry 6 in co-op fundamentally changes the dynamic of combat and exploration. Here's how to make the most of it:
Shared Progression
The good news is that most of your progress is shared! The host player's world state dictates the mission progress. However, the guest player will retain:
- Experience Points (XP)
- Acquired Gear: Weapons, armor, Supremo backpacks, and Resolver weapons.
- Resources: Materials like Industrial Circuits, Durable Plastic, and Gunpowder.
- Unlocked Amigos
- Unlocked FND Bases and Checkpoints: If the guest player hasn't cleared them in their own world, they will still be marked as cleared for them after the co-op session.
Note: Story mission progression only counts for the host. If the guest player hasn't completed that specific mission in their own campaign, they will need to replay it later to progress their story.
Combat Synergy
Two Dani Rojas are better than one! Co-op opens up a plethora of tactical opportunities:
- Flanking Maneuvers: One player can draw enemy attention while the other flanks from a different angle, using a suppressed rifle like the MS16 S or a bow with Precision Arrows for stealthy takedowns.
- Synchronized Takedowns: When infiltrating an FND Base or Checkpoint, mark high-priority targets (snipers, alarms, heavy gunners) and execute simultaneous takedowns. The "Tag Target" feature (usually by aiming down sights and pressing a specific button) is crucial here.
- Reviving Teammates: If a teammate goes down, you have a limited time to revive them. Prioritize clearing immediate threats before attempting a revive. Using a Supremo like the Triador to highlight enemies through walls can be invaluable for a safe revive.
- Vehicle Combat: One player can drive a vehicle like a Technical or a Jeep while the other operates the mounted weapon. This is highly effective against convoys or when assaulting heavily fortified positions.
- Amigo Support: Coordinate your Amigos! Have one player deploy an aggressive Amigo like Chorizo to distract enemies, while the other uses a stealthy Amigo like Boom Boom to tag targets.
Exploration and Resource Gathering
While exploring Yara, co-op makes resource gathering and discovery more efficient:
- Splitting Up: In less dangerous areas, you can split up to cover more ground, finding hidden caches, FND crates, and Libertad Crates faster. Just be mindful of enemy patrols.
- Sharing Resources: While resources are collected individually, you can communicate about specific needs. For instance, if one player is low on Gasoline for crafting, the other can prioritize finding it.
- Treasure Hunts: Many of Yara's Treasure Hunts are designed for a single player, but having a second set of eyes can help solve puzzles faster and locate hidden switches or entrances.
Troubleshooting Common Co-op Issues
While generally stable, you might encounter some minor issues:
- Connection Drops: If a player disconnects, the remaining player will continue in single-player mode. The disconnected player can usually rejoin via the "Join a Friend" option.
- Lag/Latency: Ensure both players have a stable internet connection. If one player has significantly higher ping, it can affect the experience for both.
- Voice Chat Issues: Far Cry 6 has built-in voice chat. If you're experiencing issues, check your in-game audio settings and your platform's privacy settings. Alternatively, use a third-party voice chat application.
- Mission Desync: Rarely, mission objectives might appear desynced. If this happens, try having both players return to the main menu and then re-inviting.
Co-op in Far Cry 6 is an excellent way to experience the chaos and beauty of Yara with a friend. Coordinate your attacks, explore together, and liberate the island as a united front!
