Factions & Allies
In the ravaged landscape of Hope County, navigating the various factions and securing reliable allies is paramount to your survival and success against the Highwaymen. This section details the key groups you'll encounter, how to gain their trust, and the invaluable support they can offer.
The Survivors of Hope County
These are the remnants of the pre-collapse population, trying to rebuild and resist the Highwaymen. They are your primary allies and the backbone of Prosperity.
Gaining Trust and Expanding Prosperity
Your relationship with the Survivors is intrinsically linked to the growth of your home base, Prosperity. As you complete missions and liberate outposts, you'll earn Ethanol, the primary resource for upgrading Prosperity.
- Upgrade the Training Camp: Prioritize this early on. Upgrading the Training Camp to at least Level II unlocks the ability to recruit more Guns for Hire (GFH) and Specialists, significantly boosting your combat effectiveness.
- Upgrade the Infirmary: A Level I Infirmary allows for faster healing and access to basic health kits. Reaching Level II provides stronger healing items and passive health regeneration for your GFHs.
- Complete Expeditions: These off-map missions, accessed via the Helipad at Prosperity, reward substantial amounts of Ethanol and rare crafting materials. Successfully completing an Expedition on its higher difficulty tiers (e.g., Difficulty II or III) yields even greater rewards, crucial for late-game upgrades.
- Liberate Outposts: Each outpost you liberate from the Highwaymen provides a steady income of Ethanol. Consider "scavenging" outposts (resetting them for a higher difficulty and more Ethanol) once you have a strong arsenal.
Key Specialists and Their Benefits
Specialists are unique characters who offer specific upgrades and services at Prosperity. Recruiting them is often tied to story missions or specific side quests.
- Thomas Rush (The Workbench): Recruited early in the main story, Rush is vital for crafting and upgrading weapons. Ensure his workbench is upgraded to Level III to unlock all weapon tiers, including the powerful Elite weapons.
- Selene (The Explosives Lab): After completing her recruitment mission, Selene provides access to explosives like Dynamite, Molotovs, and eventually the devastating Proximity Mines. Upgrade her lab to Level II for advanced explosives.
- Bean (The Garage): Bean, found during the mission "Go With the Flow," allows you to craft and customize vehicles. Upgrade his garage to Level III to unlock the fastest and most heavily armored vehicles, essential for traversing the map and engaging Highwaymen convoys.
The Highwaymen
The primary antagonists, led by the Twins, Mickey and Lou. They are a ruthless, organized force that controls much of Hope County. While you cannot ally with them, understanding their structure and tactics is crucial for dismantling their operations.
Highwaymen Outposts and Supply Runs
Highwaymen outposts are heavily guarded strongholds that serve as resource hubs. Approaching them strategically is key:
- Reconnaissance is Key: Before assaulting an outpost, use your binoculars or a drone (unlocked via the Exploration perk) to tag all enemies, alarms, and environmental hazards. Prioritize taking out snipers and heavy gunners.
- Stealth Approach: For maximum Ethanol rewards, attempt to liberate outposts without triggering alarms. Use silenced weapons like the "Optimism" Compound Bow or the "Blunderbuss" Silenced SMG for stealth takedowns. Disabling alarms should be a top priority.
- Supply Trucks: Highwaymen supply trucks frequently travel between outposts. Intercepting these provides a quick source of Ethanol. Use explosives or heavy weapons to disable them, then eliminate the escorts.
Guns For Hire (GFH)
These are individual allies with unique skills that you can recruit to fight alongside you. You can have one GFH active at a time, or two if you have the Leadership perk.
Recruiting and Utilizing GFHs
Each GFH is unlocked by completing a specific side mission. Their abilities are invaluable in combat.
- Carmina Rye (The Pilot): Unlocked early in the story. Carmina is excellent for aerial support with her plane, strafing enemy positions and dropping bombs. She's particularly effective against vehicles and large groups of enemies in open areas.
- Timber (The Dog): Found during the mission "Man Eat Dog." Timber can tag enemies, retrieve crafting materials from fallen foes, and even distract enemies. He's invaluable for stealth approaches and resource gathering. Direct him to specific targets using the command wheel.
- Nana (The Sniper): Recruited after completing "The Admiral" mission. Nana is a master sniper, capable of taking out enemies from extreme range with her silenced rifle. She's perfect for supporting stealth operations or eliminating high-value targets like snipers or alarm operators from a distance. Position her on high ground for maximum effectiveness.
- Hurk Drubman Jr. (The Rocket Man): Unlocked after "The Prophecy" mission. Hurk wields a rocket launcher, making him devastating against vehicles, armored enemies, and fortified positions. He's less subtle but incredibly effective in direct confrontations.
Remember to swap your GFH based on the mission at hand. Timber is great for stealth and scavenging, while Hurk is your go-to for heavy combat.
