Reputation & Relationships
In the vibrant, post-apocalyptic world of Hope County, your standing with its denizens, both human and animal, is crucial. Building strong relationships and a solid reputation can unlock valuable perks, resources, and even new allies. This section details how to cultivate these connections and leverage them for your survival and success against the Highwaymen.
Guns For Hire (GFH) & Fangs For Hire (FFH)
Your most direct relationships are with your companions. These loyal allies, known as Guns For Hire (GFH) and Fangs For Hire (FFH), each possess unique abilities that can turn the tide of any engagement. To maximize their effectiveness, you need to understand how their reputation grows and what benefits it brings.
Recruiting Companions
- GFH: Most human companions are recruited through specific story missions or side missions. For example, Carmina Rye joins you after completing the mission "The Prophecy," while Hurk Drubman Jr. becomes available after "Days of Blunder."
- FFH: Animal companions, or Fangs For Hire, are typically found in the open world and recruited after a brief interaction or a small task. Timber, the Akita, is found near the Stash "The Best Laid Plans" in the northern part of the map, requiring you to clear out some Highwaymen before he trusts you. Horatio, the boar, is unlocked after completing the side mission "Adorabull" for Bean.
Leveling Up Companions
Each GFH and FFH has a reputation level that increases with combat experience. The more they fight alongside you, the faster they level up. Their reputation is tied to the number of kills they achieve and the amount of damage they inflict on enemies. There are three distinct levels for each companion, each unlocking a new, powerful ability:
- Level 1: Initial ability, available upon recruitment.
- Level 2: Unlocks a secondary, more potent ability.
- Level 3: Unlocks their ultimate, game-changing ability.
Strategies for Rapid Leveling:
- Outpost Raids: Repeatedly assaulting and re-taking Outposts is an excellent way to gain combat experience for your companions. The Highwaymen respawn, providing a continuous stream of enemies. Consider liberating an Outpost, then "scavenging" it to reset it at a higher difficulty, offering more challenge and XP.
- Expeditions: These repeatable missions, accessed from the Expeditions menu at Prosperity, offer intense combat scenarios in new locations. They are perfect for racking up kills for your GFH/FFH. Focus on securing the package and extracting, letting your companion engage as much as possible.
- Highwaymen Patrols & Convoys: Actively seek out and engage Highwaymen patrols and convoys encountered in the open world. These smaller skirmishes contribute steadily to your companion's experience.
- Specific Companion Focus: If you want to level a particular companion quickly, make sure they are your active companion for all combat encounters. Swap them out at the "Roster" menu in Prosperity or from the "Companions" tab in your main menu.
Companion Abilities & Synergies
Understanding each companion's abilities is key to forming effective combat strategies. For instance:
- Nana (GFH): At Level 2, she gains "Boom Boom," allowing her to shoot through cover. At Level 3, "Silent Killer" makes her shots completely silent, perfect for stealth approaches. Pair her with a stealthy player build for maximum impact.
- Timber (FFH): His Level 2 ability, "Pointer," marks crafting materials and enemies, making him invaluable for exploration and tactical awareness. At Level 3, "Guard Dog" disarms enemies, creating openings for you to exploit.
- Horatio (FFH): This tough boar's Level 2 ability, "Charge," allows him to knock down multiple enemies, creating crowd control. His Level 3 ability, "Pig's Might," makes him incredibly resilient, drawing enemy fire and allowing you to flank.
Earning Prosperity's Trust
Your reputation within Prosperity, your home base, is intrinsically linked to its upgrades. As you complete missions and gather resources, you contribute to the community's growth. This isn't a direct "reputation bar" but rather a progression tied to the facilities you upgrade.
Upgrading Facilities
Each facility in Prosperity (e.g., Infirmary, Training Camp, Explosives Lab) has three upgrade levels. Upgrading these facilities requires specific amounts of Ethanol, a crucial resource obtained primarily from Outposts and Supply Drops. As you upgrade, you gain:
- Improved Services: Better healing at the Infirmary, stronger weapons at the Workbench, more potent explosives, etc.
- New Perks: Upgrading the Training Camp, for example, unlocks new Perk Points for you to spend.
- Access to Specialists: Some Specialists, like Selene for the Explosives Lab, only become available after their respective facility reaches a certain level.
Community Involvement
- Side Missions: Completing Side Missions for the residents of Prosperity and the surrounding areas directly contributes to their well-being and your standing. These missions often reward Ethanol, components, and sometimes even new GFH.
- Rescuing Hostages: Liberating hostages from Highwaymen patrols or random encounters will often result in them returning to Prosperity, subtly boosting the morale and population of your home base.
- Resource Gathering: Actively gathering resources like Components, Copper, and Titanium, and bringing them back to Prosperity, helps the community thrive and allows for further upgrades.
By focusing on both your personal companion relationships and the overall growth of Prosperity, you'll ensure a strong foundation for your fight against the Highwaymen and a more prosperous future for Hope County.
