Economy & Spending

Welcome to the irradiated, resource-scarce world of Hope County! In Far Cry New Dawn, managing your economy is crucial for survival and progression. Unlike previous Far Cry titles, cash is largely irrelevant. Your primary currency is Ethanol, alongside several crafting materials. Understanding how to acquire and spend these efficiently will make your journey through the wasteland significantly smoother.

Ethanol: The Lifeblood of Prosperity

Ethanol is the most vital resource in New Dawn. It's used exclusively for upgrading Prosperity, your home base. Each upgrade tier unlocks new facilities, better gear, and improved capabilities. Prioritizing Ethanol acquisition is key to early game success.

Acquiring Ethanol

  • Outpost Liberations: This is your primary source of Ethanol. Each outpost offers a base amount upon liberation. However, you can "scavenge" an outpost after taking it over, which yields a smaller amount of Ethanol but resets the outpost, allowing you to retake it for more. The difficulty of the outpost increases with each scavenge, offering higher Ethanol rewards.
    • Strategy: Early on, liberate and scavenge outposts frequently. Focus on the easier Tier 1 and 2 outposts first. Once you've upgraded Prosperity a few times, tackle the tougher Tier 3 outposts for maximum gains.
    • Specific Locations: Early game, target outposts like the Broken Forge or The Refinery, which are relatively straightforward to clear.
  • Supply Drops: Look for flares in the sky indicating a supply drop. Race to the location, eliminate any Highwaymen, and claim the Ethanol. These are time-sensitive events.
  • Expeditions: These off-map missions offer substantial Ethanol rewards upon completion. The higher the difficulty tier of the Expedition, the more Ethanol you'll earn.
    • Strategy: Expeditions are excellent for boosting your Ethanol reserves, especially after you've unlocked better weapons and perks.
  • Treasure Hunts: Completing these environmental puzzles often rewards a good chunk of Ethanol, alongside other valuable crafting materials.
  • Highwaymen Convoys: Destroying these moving targets can yield small amounts of Ethanol and other resources.

Spending Ethanol: Upgrading Prosperity

Your Ethanol should always be invested in upgrading Prosperity. Access the upgrade menu from the main building in Prosperity. Here's a breakdown of key upgrades:

  • Workbench: Unlocks higher-tier weapons and vehicles. Prioritize this to stay competitive with enemy ranks.
  • Infirmary: Increases your health and unlocks health-related perks. Essential for survivability.
  • Training Camp: Improves your Guns for Hire and Fangs for Hire, making them more effective in combat.
  • Explosives Lab: Unlocks stronger explosives and throwables.
  • Garage: Allows you to craft and store more vehicles.
  • Expedition Tent: Unlocks higher difficulty tiers for Expeditions, leading to better rewards.
  • Garden: Increases the yield of plants you collect, useful for crafting consumables.
  • Cartography: Reveals more points of interest on your map.

Recommendation: Focus on upgrading your Workbench and Infirmary first. Having access to better weapons and more health will significantly ease the early game challenges.

Crafting Materials: Beyond Ethanol

While Ethanol fuels Prosperity, crafting materials are essential for your personal arsenal and consumables. These include:

  • Components: Used for crafting basic weapons and vehicles. Found in most containers and from defeated enemies.
  • Titanium: A rarer material, vital for higher-tier weapons and vehicles. Look for it in safes, treasure hunt caches, and from elite enemies.
  • Circuit Boards: Required for advanced weapon modifications and some vehicle upgrades. Often found in electronic scrap piles and from specific enemy types.
  • Springs, Gears, Duct Tape, etc.: Common crafting components for various items. Scavenge everything!
  • Animal Skins & Meat: Used for crafting health kits and other consumables. Hunt regularly.
  • Plants: Found throughout the world, used for crafting various consumables and buffs.

Acquiring Crafting Materials

  • Looting: Open every container, body, and bag you find. This is your most consistent source.
  • Hunting & Fishing: Provides animal skins and meat. Different animals yield different qualities of materials.
  • Scavenging Outposts: As mentioned, scavenging outposts provides a small amount of Ethanol, but also a good haul of various crafting materials.
  • Treasure Hunts: Often contain significant amounts of rare materials like Titanium and Circuit Boards.
  • Expeditions: Reward a diverse array of crafting materials, especially on higher difficulties.
  • Dismantling Weapons: If you pick up a weapon you don't need, you can dismantle it for some crafting components.

Spending Crafting Materials

Crafting materials are spent at the Workbench (for weapons and vehicles) and the Medkit Station (for health kits and other consumables) within Prosperity. Always ensure you have a decent stock of common materials, and actively seek out rarer ones as you unlock higher-tier blueprints.

By diligently gathering Ethanol and crafting materials, and making strategic choices in your Prosperity upgrades, you'll transform your humble outpost into a formidable bastion against the Highwaymen threat.
