Hunting & Gathering
Survival in Oros hinges on your ability to effectively hunt the diverse fauna and gather the essential resources scattered throughout the land. Mastering these skills is paramount for crafting weapons, tools, village upgrades, and even healing items. This section will guide you through efficient strategies for acquiring everything you need to thrive.
Hunting Strategies
Hunting provides crucial resources like Meat, Animal Hides, Animal Fat, and Bones. Different animals yield different quantities and types of these materials, and some are far more dangerous than others. Always be prepared for a fight, especially when tracking larger predators.
- Stealth is Key: For most animals, approaching undetected will give you the advantage. Use tall grass and natural cover to get close. Your Hunter Vision (activated by pressing 'Q' on PC) is invaluable for spotting animal tracks and highlighting their weak points.
- Weapon Choice:
- Spears: Excellent for one-shot kills on smaller animals and dealing significant damage to larger ones. Aim for the head or vital organs.
- Bow & Arrows: Ideal for silent takedowns from a distance. Headshots are critical for efficiency. Craft different arrow types (e.g., Fire Arrows) for added utility against tougher foes or for setting traps.
- Clubs: Best used as a last resort in close combat or for finishing off wounded animals.
- Animal Companions: Your tamed beasts are invaluable hunting partners.
- Saber-toothed Tiger/Cave Lion: Excellent for taking down large prey quickly. They can distract enemies, allowing you to get in critical hits.
- Wolf/Dhole: Good for tracking and harassing smaller to medium-sized animals.
- Owl: Use your Owl to scout ahead, tag animals, and even drop Sting Bombs or Fire Bombs on unsuspecting prey or predators.
- Trapping: Laying down Snares or Bait can be an effective way to catch smaller animals or lure larger ones into an ambush. Place Bait near a Snare for guaranteed results on smaller creatures.
- Resource Management: Always skin animals immediately after a kill to collect their resources. Prioritize collecting rare hides for critical upgrades.
Targeting Specific Animals
- Deer, Goats, Dholes: Common and relatively easy to hunt. Provide Meat, Animal Hides, and some Bones. Good for early-game resource gathering.
- Boars, Wolves: More aggressive but offer better yields of Meat, Hides, and Animal Fat. Engage with spears or a bow from a safe distance.
- Bears (Brown Bear, Cave Bear): Dangerous and require careful planning. Aim for headshots with spears or heavy clubs. They provide significant amounts of Meat, Rare Animal Hides, Animal Fat, and Bones.
- Saber-toothed Tigers, Cave Lions: Extremely dangerous predators. Use your Beast Companion to distract them while you land critical hits. They drop Rare Animal Hides and other valuable resources.
- Mammoths: The largest and most challenging prey. Best hunted with multiple spears, fire, and a strong Beast Companion. They provide massive amounts of Meat, Rare Animal Hides, and Bones.
Gathering Essential Resources
The world of Oros is rich with natural resources vital for crafting and survival. Always keep an eye out for glowing plants and minerals, especially at night, as these indicate gatherable items.
- Wood: Found everywhere, typically from breaking small trees, bushes, or fallen branches. Essential for crafting spears, arrows, and village upgrades.
- Reeds: Found near water sources like rivers and lakes. Crucial for crafting arrows and some village structures.
- Slate: Common rock formations. Used for crafting tools and weapons.
- Flint: Often found near Slate deposits or in rocky areas. Essential for crafting sharper tools and weapons.
- Hardwood: Found from larger, sturdier trees. Required for advanced crafting and village upgrades.
- Clay: Found in muddy areas, often near water. Used for various crafting recipes.
Plants and Herbs for Crafting & Healing
Plants are vital for crafting healing items, bombs, and other useful consumables. Your Hunter Vision will highlight these resources, making them easier to spot.
- Green Leaf: The most common healing herb. Gather as much as possible to craft Healing Pouches. Found almost everywhere.
- Red Leaf: Used for crafting Fire Bombs and other fire-based items. Often found in drier, rockier areas.
- Blue Leaf: Essential for crafting Sting Bombs and other distraction tools. Typically found in damp, shaded areas or near water.
- Yellow Leaf: Used for crafting Berserk Shards, which can turn enemies against each other. Found in specific regions, often higher elevations.
- Black Leaf: A rarer herb used for crafting Poison Bombs. Look for it in darker, more secluded parts of the map, sometimes in caves.
Strategic Gathering Tips
- Explore Thoroughly: Don't just rush through areas. Take your time to scan your surroundings with Hunter Vision.
- Nighttime Advantage: Many resources glow at night, making them much easier to spot. However, nighttime also brings out more dangerous predators.
- Village Upgrades: Prioritize upgrading the huts of your specialists (e.g., Sayla's Hut, Jayma's Hut) as these often unlock new crafting recipes and increase your resource storage capacity.
- Resource Runs: Dedicate specific trips to gathering. Plan routes that take you through areas rich in the resources you need most.
- Check the Map: Once you discover a resource node, it often appears on your map, allowing you to return to it later.
