Transportation (Ship, Airship)
As you journey through the world of Final Fantasy, you'll quickly realize that traversing its vast landscapes on foot isn't always practical. Fortunately, the game provides two essential modes of transportation: the Ship and the Airship. Mastering their acquisition and use is crucial for efficient exploration and progression.
The Ship
Your first taste of true freedom on the world map comes with the acquisition of the Ship. This vessel allows you to sail across the seas, opening up new continents and vital locations.
Acquisition Steps:
- Defeat Garland: Your initial quest requires you to rescue Princess Sara from the rogue knight, Garland, in the Chaos Shrine. Once he is defeated, Princess Sara will reward you with the Lute.
- Return to Cornelia: Bring the Lute back to King of Cornelia.
- Receive the Ship: As a token of his gratitude for rescuing his daughter and restoring peace to Cornelia, the King will grant you access to the Ship. It will be docked in the harbor just south of Cornelia.
Using the Ship:
- Embarking: Simply walk onto the Ship from the dock.
- Controls: Use the directional pad to steer the Ship across the water. You cannot sail over land or through shallow waters.
- Key Destinations: The Ship is indispensable for reaching locations such as Pravoka, Elfheim, Melmond, and the Western Continent where the Earth Cave is located.
- Limitations: While the Ship offers significant mobility, it is confined to the oceans. Certain areas, particularly those separated by mountains or impassable terrain, remain out of reach until you acquire the Airship.
The Airship
The Airship is the ultimate mode of transportation in Final Fantasy, offering unparalleled freedom to fly over any terrain, including mountains and forests. This dramatically reduces travel time and unlocks access to late-game areas and hidden secrets.
Acquisition Steps:
Obtaining the Airship is a more involved process, requiring you to delve into ancient ruins and defeat powerful foes.
- Retrieve the Floater:
- After acquiring the Ship and progressing through the main story, you'll eventually need to visit the town of Melmond on the Western Continent.
- From Melmond, head northwest to the Giants' Cave. Navigate through the cave and speak with the Giant there. He will tell you about the Floater.
- Your next destination is the Ice Cave, located far to the north of Melmond, across a frozen expanse. This dungeon is treacherous, filled with powerful ice-elemental enemies. Be prepared with fire-based spells and equipment.
- Deep within the Ice Cave, you will find the Floater. Be warned, it is guarded by a powerful enemy, often a White Dragon or similar formidable foe depending on the version of the game. Defeat it to claim your prize.
- Travel to the Ryukahn Desert: With the Floater in hand, sail your Ship to the southern continent. Locate the vast Ryukahn Desert, which is otherwise impassable on foot.
- Activate the Airship:
- Once you enter the Ryukahn Desert with the Floater in your inventory, the Airship, which has been buried beneath the sands, will magically rise.
- You will automatically board the Airship upon its emergence.
Using the Airship:
- Unrestricted Movement: The Airship can fly over any terrain on the world map, allowing you to bypass mountains, forests, and other obstacles. This makes revisiting earlier areas for side quests or grinding significantly faster.
- Controls: Similar to the Ship, use the directional pad to navigate. You can land the Airship on any open, flat terrain.
- Strategic Importance: The Airship is essential for reaching locations like the Mirage Tower, the Flying Fortress, and other remote dungeons that are key to completing the game's narrative.
- No Combat: While flying, you are safe from random encounters on the world map.
Mastering both the Ship and the Airship will allow you to explore every corner of Final Fantasy's world, uncover its secrets, and ultimately confront the forces of Chaos.
