Post-Game Content
Congratulations, Warrior of Light! You've vanquished Chaos and restored balance to the world. However, your adventure doesn't have to end there. Depending on the version of Final Fantasy I you're playing, there's a wealth of additional content, challenges, and powerful gear waiting to be discovered. This section will guide you through the most significant post-game activities.
The Soul of Chaos Dungeons (Dawn of Souls / Pixel Remaster)
For players of the "Dawn of Souls" GBA version or the "Pixel Remaster," the most substantial post-game addition is the "Soul of Chaos" dungeons. These are four challenging, multi-floor labyrinths, each themed after one of the four elemental fiends. They offer unique boss encounters, powerful new equipment, and a significant test of your party's strength and strategy.
Accessing the Dungeons
After defeating Chaos and watching the credits, load your cleared save file. The dungeons will now be accessible from specific locations on the world map:
- Earthgift Shrine: Located near the Earth Cave, south of Pravoka.
- Hellfire Chasm: Found near Mount Gulg, east of Elfheim.
- Whisperwind Cove: Situated near the Ice Cave, north of Crescent Lake.
- Lifespring Grotto: Accessible near the Sea Shrine, west of Melmond.
General Strategies for Soul of Chaos
- Level Up: Aim for your party to be at least Level 40-50 before attempting these dungeons. The enemies are significantly tougher than anything in the main story.
- Best Equipment: Ensure your party is outfitted with the best possible gear. This includes items found in the main game's final dungeons, like the Masamune, Ribbon, and Light Axe.
- Stock Up: Carry a full inventory of Potions, Hi-Potions, Phoenix Downs, and Ethers. MP restoration will be crucial for lengthy boss battles.
- Magic Diversity: A balanced magic user (White Mage/Wizard and Black Mage/Wizard) is highly recommended. Spells like Haste, Temper, Protect, Curaga, Firaga, Blizzaga, and Thundaga will be essential.
- Save Frequently: Each dungeon has multiple floors and often features mini-bosses before the main encounter. Save your progress often, especially before challenging a new boss.
Dungeon Breakdown & Notable Rewards
Earthgift Shrine
- Theme: Earth-elemental. Expect encounters with powerful Golems, Earth Elementals, and other rock-hard foes.
- Bosses: Features a series of four optional bosses before the main boss. The final boss is often a powerful variant of a classic Final Fantasy monster, such as Ahriman or 2-Headed Dragon.
- Key Rewards: Look for the Ragnarok sword, Muramasa katana, and the Genji Armor set.
Hellfire Chasm
- Theme: Fire-elemental. Prepare for high-damage fire attacks from enemies like Red Dragons and Fire Elementals.
- Bosses: Similar to Earthgift, you'll face multiple mini-bosses. The main boss here could be a formidable foe like Typhon or Orthros.
- Key Rewards: Excellent fire-resistant gear and powerful offensive weapons like the Ultima Weapon (though its true power is often tied to specific conditions).
Whisperwind Cove
- Theme: Wind/Ice-elemental. Expect enemies with strong ice and wind magic, such as White Dragons and Air Elementals.
- Bosses: This dungeon often features bosses known for their speed and evasion, potentially including Omega or Shinryu.
- Key Rewards: High-evasion armor, speed-boosting accessories, and potent ice-elemental weapons.
Lifespring Grotto
- Theme: Water-elemental. Be ready for enemies that inflict status effects and use water-based attacks, like Kraken variants and Water Elementals.
- Bosses: The final challenge often involves a boss with high HP and devastating magical attacks, such as Deathgaze or Atomos.
- Key Rewards: Powerful healing items, water-resistant armor, and some of the game's ultimate accessories.
Completing the Bestiary and Item Compendium
For completionists, the post-game is the perfect time to finalize your in-game records. Many of the rare monsters and unique items are found within the Soul of Chaos dungeons or are dropped by their bosses. Take the time to explore every corner, open every chest, and defeat every new enemy type you encounter.
- Bestiary: Ensure you've encountered and defeated every monster. Some rare encounters might require specific conditions or repeated visits to certain areas.
- Item Compendium: Collect all weapons, armor, and items. This will involve careful exploration of the bonus dungeons and defeating all their unique bosses for their exclusive drops.
Maxing Out Your Party (All Versions)
Even without the bonus dungeons, you can continue to strengthen your party to their absolute maximum potential. This involves:
- Level Grinding: The best spots for experience points are often the final floors of the Chaos Temple, especially the areas leading up to the final boss. Repeatedly battling the powerful enemies there will quickly raise your levels.
- Gold Farming: High-level equipment and spells can be expensive. Return to areas with high-value enemy drops or simply grind in high-level zones to accumulate wealth. The Giant's Glove (found in the Ice Cave) can be sold for a good amount of gold if you don't need it.
- Optimizing Equipment: Experiment with different equipment combinations to find the absolute best setup for each character class. Consider elemental resistances, stat boosts, and special properties.
Whether you're delving into the challenging Soul of Chaos dungeons or simply aiming for a perfect save file, Final Fantasy I offers plenty of reasons to keep playing long after the credits roll.
