Shops and Merchants
Navigating the various shops and merchants in Final Fantasy II is crucial for your party's survival and progression. Unlike traditional RPGs where experience points dictate power, your characters' stats and spell levels improve based on usage. This means strategic purchases of equipment and spells can significantly impact your ability to train and overcome challenges. Always prioritize upgrading your gear and acquiring new spells as soon as they become available and affordable.
General Shopping Strategies
- Prioritize Weapons and Armor: Stronger weapons increase your attack power, making it easier to level up weapon skills. Better armor reduces incoming damage, allowing your characters to survive longer in battles and thus gain more stat increases.
- Acquire New Spells Early: Spells level up through repeated use. Purchasing new spells as soon as you can afford them allows you to begin training them immediately, ensuring your mages are well-equipped for later encounters.
- Stock Up on Potions and Ethers: While not always available, Potions are essential for healing in dungeons, and Ethers are invaluable for restoring MP to your spellcasters. Don't underestimate the utility of these basic recovery items.
- Sell Obsolete Gear: Don't hoard old equipment. Once you've upgraded, sell your outdated weapons and armor to free up inventory space and generate gil for new purchases.
- Check All Shops in a Town: Most towns have separate shops for Weapons, Armor, and Magic. Always visit all three to see the full range of available items.
Town-Specific Merchant Inventories
Altair
Your first safe haven after the initial attack. The shops here offer basic but essential gear to get your party started.
- Weapon Shop:
- Broadsword: A decent starting weapon for Firion or Guy.
- Axe: Guy can wield this effectively.
- Bow: Useful for Maria if you want her to contribute physical damage from the back row.
- Dagger: A weaker alternative, but sometimes all you can afford.
- Armor Shop:
- Leather Armor: Basic protection for all.
- Leather Shield: Improves defense for those who can equip it.
- Cap: Head protection.
- Magic Shop:
- Cure: Absolutely essential. Buy for all characters you intend to use magic with.
- Fire: Your first offensive spell.
- Blizzard: Another early offensive option.
- Thunder: Round out your elemental attack spells.
- Protect: Increases defense; useful for tougher encounters.
- Blind: Can debuff enemies, making them miss more often.
Gatrea
A small village that becomes accessible early on. Its offerings are similar to Altair but might have a few minor upgrades.
- Weapon Shop: Expect slightly stronger versions of basic weapons like the Long Sword or Battle Axe.
- Armor Shop: Look for Bronze Armor and Bronze Shield for improved defense.
- Magic Shop: You might find Poisona here, a crucial spell for curing poison status. Also check for Sleep, which can incapacitate groups of weaker enemies.
Paloom & Poft
These two port towns become accessible after acquiring the Canoe. Their inventories are often linked, and they introduce more advanced equipment.
- Weapon Shop: Look for the Mythril Sword, Mythril Axe, and Mythril Spear. These are significant upgrades.
- Armor Shop: Mythril Armor and Mythril Shield should be your priority.
- Magic Shop: This is where you'll start seeing more potent spells. Keep an eye out for Osmose (restores MP by draining enemy MP), Warp (can instantly defeat enemies or escape dungeons), and stronger elemental spells like Fira or Blizzara.
Salamand
Located in the snowy regions, Salamand offers some unique equipment, especially for those focusing on axes and heavy armor.
- Weapon Shop: You'll find powerful axes like the Great Axe here.
- Armor Shop: Heavy Armor and Heavy Shield provide substantial physical defense, though they might slow down characters with low Agility.
- Magic Shop: Check for healing spells like Cura and status-curing spells such as Stona (cures petrification) and Esuna (cures multiple status ailments).
Bafsk
A town under Imperial control. Shops here might have slightly different stock or prices due to the political climate. Always check for new weapon and armor tiers.
- General Strategy: Focus on acquiring the next tier of weapons and armor, typically Silver or Gold variants if available. Ensure your spellcasters have updated offensive and defensive magic.
Fynn
The capital of the rebellion, Fynn's shops will evolve as the story progresses. Initially, they might be limited, but after its liberation, they will offer some of the best gear in the game.
- Post-Liberation Fynn:
- Weapon Shop: Expect high-tier weapons like the Flame Sword, Ice Brand, and Thunder Spear. Also look for powerful bows and staves.
- Armor Shop: Diamond Armor, Diamond Shield, and various elemental shields (e.g., Flame Shield) will become available.
- Magic Shop: This is where you'll find advanced spells like Curaga, Firaga, Blizzaga, Thundaga, Haste, Berserk, and Holy. These are crucial for the endgame.
Remember that the availability of items and spells can sometimes be tied to story progression. If you don't see an item mentioned, it might become available after completing a specific quest or advancing further in the main scenario.
