Missable Items/Content
Final Fantasy III, in its various iterations (NES, DS, Pixel Remaster), contains several items and pieces of content that can be permanently missed if not acquired at specific points in the game. This section details these crucial acquisitions to ensure a 100% completionist run.
Early Game Exclusives
These items are available only during the initial stages of the game, often before receiving airship access or progressing past certain story beats.
- Mythril Swords (x2):
- Location: Ur Village, in the hidden passage behind the waterfall.
- Strategy: During your very first visit to Ur, thoroughly explore the village. Head to the northern part of town, locate the waterfall, and walk directly into it to reveal a secret path. Inside, you'll find two chests containing Mythril Swords. These are excellent early-game weapons for Warriors or Knights and become inaccessible once you leave Ur for good after the initial questline.
- Leather Shield:
- Location: Kazus, in a chest within the town.
- Strategy: While in Kazus, before the town is cursed and its inhabitants turned into ghosts, locate the chest containing the Leather Shield. This basic piece of equipment is easily overlooked but becomes unobtainable once the curse takes hold and the town's layout changes or certain areas become inaccessible.
- Magic Key (x1):
- Location: Sasune Castle, in a hidden room.
- Strategy: After the events in Sasune Castle and before you proceed to the Sealed Cave, thoroughly search the castle. There's a hidden passage on the second floor, often behind a bookshelf or tapestry, that leads to a room with a chest containing a Magic Key. While more Magic Keys can be found later, this is an early and easily missed one.
Dungeon-Specific Treasures
Many dungeons are one-time visits or have areas that become sealed off after completing their objectives. Be diligent!
- Viking Axe:
- Location: Viking Base, in a chest.
- Strategy: Upon arriving at the Viking Base, before setting sail on the Enterprise, ensure you explore every accessible room. There's a chest containing the Viking Axe, a powerful weapon for a Warrior or Knight at this stage. Once you depart on the Enterprise, the base's internal layout may change or become less accessible for treasure hunting.
- Scholar's Robe:
- Location: Tower of Owen, in a chest.
- Strategy: The Tower of Owen is a linear dungeon. As you ascend, keep an eye out for all chests. The Scholar's Robe is a valuable piece of armor for mages. Once you defeat Medusa and the tower's purpose is fulfilled, returning to specific floors for missed items can be difficult or impossible.
- Elixir (x1):
- Location: Goldor Manor, in a hidden passage.
- Strategy: Goldor Manor is a labyrinthine dungeon. There's a specific hidden passage on the ground floor, often concealed by a wall or pillar, that leads to a chest containing an Elixir. Elixirs are rare and powerful healing items, and this one is easily missed if you don't meticulously check every wall for secret paths. Once Goldor is defeated, the manor's structure may shift, making this inaccessible.
Event-Triggered Missables
These items are tied to specific story events or character interactions that, once passed, cannot be revisited.
- Mini Spell (x1):
- Location: Tozus, given by the Elder.
- Strategy: When you first arrive in Tozus and are tasked with helping the town, speak to the Elder multiple times. He will eventually give you a Mini spell. This is a crucial spell for progressing through certain areas and is a one-time acquisition. Do not leave Tozus without obtaining it.
- Letter from Sara:
- Location: Sasune Castle, given by Princess Sara.
- Strategy: After rescuing Princess Sara from the Sealed Cave, return to Sasune Castle and speak to her before progressing the main story too far. She will give you a letter. While not an item with direct combat utility, it's a unique story artifact and a key piece of lore that cannot be obtained later.
Always remember to save frequently, especially before entering new areas or triggering major story events. A thorough exploration of every screen and interaction with all NPCs can prevent missing these valuable or unique pieces of Final Fantasy III's world.
