Bestiary / Enemy List
Welcome to the comprehensive Bestiary for Final Fantasy IV! This section details the myriad foes you'll encounter on your journey, from the lowliest Goblin to the most formidable bosses. Understanding your enemies' strengths, weaknesses, and potential drops is crucial for strategic combat and efficient progression. Whether you're looking to farm specific items, exploit elemental vulnerabilities, or simply prepare for a challenging dungeon, this guide has you covered.
We've broken down the enemies by the general order you'll encounter them in the game, making it easy to reference as you progress through the main story. Each entry provides vital statistics, effective strategies, and valuable item drops.
Early Game Encounters (Baron to Antlion Cave)
These are the first enemies you'll face, primarily around Baron, Mist Cave, Kaipo, and the Underground Waterway. Focus on basic attacks and understanding elemental affinities.
Baron Area & Mist Cave
- Goblin:
- Location: Baron Plains, Mist Cave.
- Strategy: Extremely weak. Any physical attack will suffice. Cecil's Dark Wave can clear groups quickly.
- Drops: Potion (Common).
- Mist Dragon: (Boss)
- Location: Mist Cave.
- Strategy: This is your first true boss. It alternates between a physical form and a "Mist" form. When it's in Mist form, DO NOT ATTACK, as it will counter with a powerful Breath attack. Wait for it to revert to its physical form, then unleash your strongest attacks. Cecil and Kain should use physical attacks.
- Drops: Mythril Sword (Guaranteed).
- Eyewing Moth:
- Location: Mist Cave.
- Strategy: Weak to physical attacks. Cecil and Kain can easily dispatch these.
- Drops: Potion (Common).
Kaipo & Underground Waterway
After the events in Mist, you'll find yourself in Kaipo. The desert surrounding Kaipo and the subsequent Underground Waterway introduce new enemy types.
- Sand Worm:
- Location: Kaipo Desert.
- Strategy: These can be a nuisance in groups. Focus fire on one at a time. Rydia's Fire spell is effective.
- Drops: Antidote (Common).
- Water Hag:
- Location: Underground Waterway.
- Strategy: Weak to Fire. Rydia's Fire spell is highly effective. Cecil and Rydia should prioritize these.
- Drops: Potion (Common).
- Gatlinghog:
- Location: Underground Waterway.
- Strategy: These have decent defense. Cecil's physical attacks are your best bet.
- Drops: Tent (Uncommon).
- Octopus: (Mini-Boss)
- Location: Subterranean Lake (Underground Waterway).
- Strategy: This large cephalopod is weak to Lightning. Rydia's Thunder spell will deal significant damage. Cecil should attack physically. Keep an eye on your HP and use Potions as needed.
- Drops: None.
Damcyan Castle & Antlion Cave
Following the tragic events at Damcyan, you'll venture into the Antlion Cave to retrieve the Sand Pearl.
- Antlion:
- Location: Antlion Cave.
- Strategy: These creatures are weak to Ice. Rydia's Blizzard spell is your primary offensive tool here. Be wary of their Counterattack, which can hit hard.
- Drops: Antidote (Common).
- Antlion (Boss):
- Location: Deep within Antlion Cave.
- Strategy: This boss is immune to magic. Cecil and Edward (if he's in your party) should focus on physical attacks. Edward's "Hide" ability can be useful to avoid damage if your HP is low. Use Potions to heal.
- Drops: Sand Pearl (Guaranteed).
Mid-Game Adversaries (Mount Hobs to Fabul)
As your party grows and changes, so do the challenges. Expect more complex enemy formations and stronger elemental attacks.
Mount Hobs
- Bomb:
- Location: Mount Hobs.
- Strategy: These enemies explode when defeated, dealing damage to the party. Try to defeat them one at a time to manage the damage. Ice spells are effective.
- Drops: Bomb Fragment (Uncommon).
- Cockatrice:
- Location: Mount Hobs.
- Strategy: Can inflict Petrify. Keep Esuna or Gold Needles ready. Weak to Wind. Kain's Jump can be effective.
- Drops: Gold Needle (Uncommon).
Fabul Castle & Surrounding Area
The journey to Fabul will pit you against several enemies, culminating in a major battle.
- Soldier:
- Location: Fabul Castle (during invasion).
- Strategy: Basic physical attackers. Focus fire to eliminate them quickly.
- Drops: Potion (Common).
- Captain:
- Location: Fabul Castle (during invasion).
- Strategy: Stronger than regular Soldiers. Prioritize these to reduce incoming damage.
- Drops: Hi-Potion (Uncommon).
