Walkthrough: Antlion's Den
Upon entering the Antlion's Den, your primary objective is to retrieve the Sand Pearl for Rosa. This dungeon is straightforward but contains some valuable treasures and a challenging boss. Be prepared for encounters with various insect-type enemies.
Antlion's Den B1
From the entrance, head directly south. You'll quickly come across a chest containing a Potion. Continue following the path as it winds around. You'll notice a small offshoot to the west; investigate it to find another chest holding a Tent. The main path will then lead you to the stairs down to B2.
Antlion's Den B2
This floor introduces more branching paths. Start by heading east from the stairs. Follow this eastern path until you reach a chest containing a Hi-Potion. Now, backtrack slightly and take the northern path. This will lead you to a small alcove with two chests: one holds a Phoenix Down, and the other a Gold Needle. These are crucial for status effects you might encounter later.
Return to the central area and proceed west. You'll find another chest here, containing a Diet Ration. Continue along the western route, which will eventually curve south and lead you to the stairs down to B3.
Antlion's Den B3
This is the final floor before the boss. From the stairs, head south. The path here is relatively linear. You'll soon reach a large, open chamber. In the center of this chamber, you'll see a distinct mound of sand – this is where the Antlion awaits. Before engaging, ensure your party is fully healed and equipped. If you're low on MP or HP, consider using a Tent you found earlier.
Boss Battle: Antlion
The Antlion is a formidable opponent, but with the right strategy, it's manageable. Here's how to tackle it:
- Party Setup: Your party will likely consist of Cecil, Rydia, Tellah, and Edward.
- Cecil: Focus on physical attacks. Use his Dark Wave ability if you have enough HP to spare, but regular attacks are generally more reliable.
- Rydia: Her Black Magic is your primary damage source. The Antlion is weak to Ice, so repeatedly cast Blizzard or Blizzara if you have it. If you're out of MP, use her Whip for some minor physical damage.
- Tellah: Tellah's versatility is key. Cast Blizzard or Blizzara to supplement Rydia's damage. If anyone is low on HP, use Cure or Cura. He can also use Slow on the Antlion to reduce its turns, giving your party more opportunities to act.
- Edward: Edward's primary role is support. Use his Heal command to restore a small amount of HP to the party, or use Item to administer Potions or Hi-Potions as needed. His physical attacks are weak, so avoid having him attack directly unless absolutely necessary.
- Antlion's Counter: Be aware that the Antlion has a counter-attack called "Counter Horn" which it uses after taking physical damage. This can inflict significant damage. If your party is low on HP, prioritize magic attacks from Rydia and Tellah to avoid triggering this counter.
Keep your party's HP up, especially Cecil's, as he'll likely be taking the brunt of the physical attacks. Continue to pummel the Antlion with Ice magic, and it will eventually fall.
After defeating the Antlion, you will automatically obtain the Sand Pearl. With your mission accomplished, use a Teleport spell (if Tellah has it) or a Teleport Stone to quickly exit the dungeon and return to Kaipo.
