Walkthrough: Kaipo
Welcome to Kaipo, a desert oasis town that serves as your next major stop after the harrowing events at Mist. You'll arrive here with Cecil and the mysterious girl, Rydia. This section will guide you through all the important interactions, item acquisitions, and preparations you should make before venturing further into the world.
Upon Arrival
As you enter Kaipo, head directly to the Inn. Rydia is still unconscious and needs rest. Cecil will lay her down, and a scene will play out where he reflects on his actions. After this, you'll regain control.
Exploring Kaipo
Kaipo is a small town, but it holds several important resources. Take your time to explore every building and speak to all the NPCs. Many provide useful lore or hints about the current political climate.
Inn
- Cost: 50 Gil per night.
- Action: Rest here to fully restore your HP and MP. This is crucial as Rydia will eventually join your party, and you'll want both characters in top shape.
- Event: After resting, a significant event will occur involving the Baron soldiers. Be prepared for a fight!
Item Shop
Located in the northern part of town. Stock up on essential consumables. You'll be heading into the desert soon, and healing items are paramount.
- Potions: Always good to have a healthy supply. Aim for at least 10-15.
- Tents: Useful for resting on the overworld map to restore HP/MP. Grab a couple.
- Phoenix Downs: Essential for reviving fallen allies. Purchase 2-3 if you can afford them.
Weapon Shop
Also in the northern part of town, near the Item Shop. Cecil's equipment is likely outdated from his time as a Dark Knight. While you can't change his weapon just yet, you can upgrade his armor.
- Iron Helm: A good upgrade for Cecil's head protection.
- Iron Armor: Improves Cecil's defense significantly.
- Iron Shield: Further boosts Cecil's defensive capabilities.
- Note: Do NOT sell Cecil's Dark Sword or Dark Armor. While they are "dark," they are still powerful for his current class and selling them would be a mistake.
Hidden Treasures & Important NPCs
- Eastern House (Old Man's House): Inside the house on the eastern side of town, speak to the old man. He provides some background information. Check the pots and barrels for a hidden Potion.
- Western House: In the house on the western side, you can find a hidden Tent in a pot.
- Well: check the well in the center of town. Sometimes, towns have hidden items here. In Kaipo, you'll find a Hi-Potion.
- Rydia's House: After the events at the Inn, Rydia will be in her own house (the one with the green roof). You'll need to visit her here to progress the story.
Story Progression
Once you've explored Kaipo and stocked up, return to the Inn and rest. After the cutscene involving the Baron soldiers, you'll be thrust into a battle:
- Boss Battle: Baron Soldiers (x2)
- Strategy: These are relatively easy. Cecil's "Attack" command should be sufficient to defeat them quickly. Focus on one at a time to minimize incoming damage.
- Reward: Experience and Gil.
Following the battle, Rydia will awaken and join your party. She starts at a low level, but her Black Magic and White Magic capabilities will be invaluable. Make sure she is equipped with any basic gear she might have (though she starts with none). You'll want to level her up as soon as possible.
Before Leaving Kaipo
With Rydia in your party, do one final check:
- Are both Cecil and Rydia fully healed (HP/MP)?
- Do you have enough Potions, Tents, and Phoenix Downs?
- Has Cecil's equipment been updated at the Weapon Shop?
Once you're ready, head north out of Kaipo to the overworld map. Your next destination is the Desert of Kaipo, leading to the Waterway.
