Walkthrough: Mt. Hobs

After the dramatic events in Fabul, your party will automatically arrive at the base of Mt. Hobs. This snowy, treacherous mountain pass is your next destination on the journey to Baron. Be prepared for cold-weather enemies and a challenging ascent.

Party Setup & Preparation

Before you even step foot on the mountain, ensure your party is well-equipped. Rosa has joined your party, bringing her White Magic to the forefront. This is crucial for healing and supporting your team. Consider the following:

  • Equip Rosa: Make sure Rosa has the best available armor and a Rod or Staff. Her healing spells will be invaluable.
  • Stock up on Potions: While Rosa can heal, MP can be scarce. Potions are a quick, reliable way to restore HP during battles.
  • Antidotes: Some enemies here can inflict Poison. A few Antidotes will save you trouble.
  • Rearrange Party: Place Cecil and Yang in the front row for maximum physical damage. Rosa and Rydia should be in the back row to protect them from physical attacks while they cast spells.

Mt. Hobs Ascent - First Section

The initial path up Mt. Hobs is straightforward but introduces you to new enemy types. Keep an eye out for:

  • Ice Lizards: Weak to Fire. Rydia's Fire spell is highly effective here.
  • Goblins: Standard fodder, easily dispatched with physical attacks.
  • Spirit: Can cast status effects. Prioritize taking them out quickly.

Follow the winding path. You'll soon come across a frozen waterfall blocking your way. A brief cutscene will trigger, and Rydia will learn the Fire spell. Use this newfound ability to melt the ice and proceed.

Mt. Hobs Ascent - Second Section & Items

Once past the melted waterfall, the path opens up slightly. Explore thoroughly to find hidden treasures:

  1. From the melted waterfall, head directly north. You'll find a chest containing a Tent. This is useful for resting and restoring HP/MP on the world map or at save points.
  2. Continue following the main path upwards. You'll encounter a small alcove to the east. Inside, you'll discover a chest with 200 Gil. Every bit of Gil helps!
  3. Further up the path, before reaching the summit, look for a small detour to the west. This leads to another chest containing a Potion.

Summit Encounter: Scarmiglione's Minions

As you approach the summit, a cutscene will play, revealing Scarmiglione, one of the Four Fiends of Elements. He will summon two Monk enemies to attack your party. This is a mini-boss encounter, but relatively simple if you're prepared.

  • Strategy: Focus your attacks on one Monk at a time to quickly reduce their numbers. Cecil and Yang's physical attacks are strong, while Rydia can use Fire or Chocobo. Rosa should focus on healing with Cure as needed. These Monks hit hard but have low HP.

After defeating the Monks, Scarmiglione will retreat, leaving the path clear. Continue to the very top of Mt. Hobs. Another cutscene will trigger, and you'll find yourself on the other side of the mountain, ready to proceed to the next area.
