Rydia is the primary magic user in your party, specializing in both Black Magic and Summoning. Initially, as a young girl, she only has access to basic Black Magic. After a significant plot event, she returns as an adult with a vast array of powerful Black Magic spells and the ability to summon powerful Eidolons. For a Summoner/Black Mage build, prioritize equipment that boosts Intellect and Spirit. Weapons like rods and staves increase her magical potency, while robes and circlets offer magical defense. Her role is to deal massive elemental damage to enemies and provide crucial utility through summons like Titan (earthquake), Shiva (ice), Ifrit (fire), Ramuh (lightning), and later, Leviathan and Bahamut. Always ensure she has enough MP to cast her most powerful spells. In battles, identify enemy weaknesses and exploit them with her extensive magical repertoire.

Much like Serah’s monster-taming role in Final Fantasy XIII-2, Rydia’s utility stems from her unique ability to call forth powerful entities to supplement her offensive spellcasting.

While Rydia’s summons act as powerful one-off spells, they represent an early mechanical foundation for the more central, persistent Eidolon combat system found in Final Fantasy XIII.
