Action Abilities: Active Skills
In Final Fantasy IX, characters learn active skills through equipped items rather than traditional leveling. As you battle, Ability Points (AP) are earned and applied to skills on equipped gear. Each skill is typically character-specific, meaning not all characters can learn every ability. Mastering a skill allows a character to retain it even after removing the equipment.
- Learning Skills: Skills are learned by equipping items and earning AP in battles. Equipping multiple items with the same ability accelerates the learning process.
- Zidane's Abilities: For the second shop challenge, equip Zidane with a Coral Ring, and the Beast Killer and Jelly abilities. If available, equip the Angel Bless weapon. The Coral Ring makes Thundara heal Zidane, and Jelly protects against the Catoblepas's Devil's Bell skill. The Moonstone from the sword fighting mini-game also grants the Beast Killer skill. Zidane can learn Flee from the Mage Masher.
- Quina's Blue Magic: Quina learns all in-battle skills through Blue Magic by using the Eat command on enemies. An enemy's HP must be at 25% or lower for Quina to learn a spell. When Quina enters Trance, the Eat command becomes Cook, and the HP threshold increases to 50% or lower.
- Notable Blue Magic to Learn:
- Roulette: Can be learned from the Zombie enemy in the Iifa Tree. Zombies have approximately 973 HP.
