Bestiary / Enemy List
Welcome to the comprehensive Bestiary for Final Fantasy IX! This section details every foe you'll encounter on your journey across Gaia, providing crucial information to help you triumph in battle and acquire valuable items. Understanding your enemies is key to mastering FFIX's combat system, especially when it comes to Stealing rare equipment or learning powerful abilities.
Understanding Enemy Entries
Each enemy entry in this bestiary follows a consistent format to ensure you have all the necessary information at your fingertips:
- Name: The official in-game name of the enemy.
- Location(s): Where you can typically find this enemy. Note that some enemies appear in multiple areas or only during specific story segments.
- HP: The enemy's approximate hit points. This can vary slightly based on your party's level and the enemy's specific encounter variant.
- Weakness(es): Elemental or status weaknesses that can be exploited for increased damage or easier status infliction.
- Resistance(s): Elemental or status resistances that reduce the effectiveness of certain attacks.
- Absorb(s): Elements that the enemy will absorb, healing them instead of damaging them. Avoid these at all costs!
- Steal: A list of items that can be stolen from the enemy using Zidane's 'Steal' command. Items are listed from most common to rarest. Prioritize stealing from new enemies, as many rare items are found this way.
- Drop: Items the enemy may drop upon defeat. These are often less rare than stolen items but can still be useful.
- AP: The Ability Points awarded for defeating this enemy. Essential for learning new abilities from equipment.
- Gil: The amount of Gil awarded for defeating this enemy.
- Strategy: Detailed advice on how to effectively combat this enemy, including recommended abilities, magic, and character roles.
General Combat Tips
- Scan Everything: Early in the game, consider having Quina use 'Scan' (learned from a Gizamaluke) on new enemies to reveal their HP, weaknesses, and resistances. This saves time and helps plan your strategy.
- Steal Relentlessly: Zidane's 'Steal' command is invaluable. Many powerful weapons, armor, and accessories can only be obtained by stealing from enemies, often with a low success rate. Equip abilities like Master Thief (from Thief Gloves) and Bandit (from Thief Hat) to improve your chances. Don't be afraid to spend several turns trying to steal everything from a single enemy, especially bosses.
- Exploit Weaknesses: Always aim to hit enemies with their elemental weaknesses. This not only deals more damage but also often interrupts their actions or inflicts status effects more easily.
- Status Effects are Your Friend: Don't underestimate the power of status effects like Silence, Blind, Slow, and Poison. Many enemies, even bosses, are susceptible to them, making battles significantly easier. Equip abilities like Add Status (from various weapons) to enhance your attacks.
- Trance Management: Trance is a powerful but unpredictable mechanic. Try to save your Trance for challenging encounters or when you need a burst of damage. Characters like Zidane and Steiner benefit greatly from their Trance abilities.
Example Entry: Fang
Let's look at a common early-game enemy to illustrate the format:
- Name: Fang
- Location(s): Evil Forest, Ice Cavern, Dali (Outskirts)
- HP: 120-150
- Weakness(es): Fire
- Resistance(s): None
- Absorb(s): None
- Steal:
- Potion (Common)
- Leather Hat (Rare)
- Drop: Potion
- AP: 2
- Gil: 15
- Strategy: Fangs are basic wolf-like enemies. They primarily use physical attacks. Their weakness to Fire makes Vivi's 'Fire' spell highly effective, often defeating them in one hit. Zidane can attempt to steal a Leather Hat, which is a decent early-game headgear for most characters and provides the Ability Up support ability. Focus Fire magic on them for quick dispatch.
Use this bestiary as your ultimate reference guide to conquer every challenge Final Fantasy IX throws your way. Happy hunting!
