Characters & Builds

In Final Fantasy IX, characters learn abilities by equipping items and earning Ability Points (AP) from battles. Each character has unique skills tied to specific equipment, meaning not every character can learn every skill. Mastering an ability allows a character to retain it even after the equipment is unequipped. Equipping multiple items with the same ability accelerates the learning process.

The game features various characters, each with their own unique playstyle and abilities. For example, Zidane Tribal can learn Flee from the Mage Masher, a skill exclusive to him. Vivi Ornitier, Garnet Til Alexandros XVII, Adelbert Steiner, Freya Crescent, Quina Quen, Eiko Carol, and Amarant Coral all have distinct abilities and roles in combat.

Beyond individual character abilities, there are broader considerations like stat boosting and treasure collection. Maxing character stats requires a very specific playstyle from the beginning of the game. For first-time players, focusing on stat maxing is not recommended. Treasure collection is also important, as missing too many items can prevent you from obtaining the Rank S Medal Key Item later in the game.

During the game, you'll encounter Active Time Events (ATEs) that can influence character interactions and even gameplay elements. For instance, in Treno, if Vivi stays in town during the "How He Ended Up Here" ATE, his opponent in the tournament will be Mario, who carries the rare Namingway Card, allowing you to rename a character. If Vivi visits his home, his opponent will be generic and not offer this card.
