Row System: Front & Back Rows
Final Fantasy IX employs a strategic row system in combat, dividing your party into a front row and a back row. This system sificantly impacts damage dealt and received, encouraging players to think carefully about party formation and character placement. Understanding how these rows function is key to optimizing your combat effectiveness.
Characters in the front row are positioned to deal and receive maximum physical damage. They are the primary attackers and are more vulnerable to enemy assaults. Characters in the front row are ideal for physical attackers like Zidane, Steiner, and Vivi when using magic that targets single enemies.
Characters in the back row are positioned further from the enemy, reducing the physical damage they take. However, their physical attacks will also deal reduced damage. The back row is ideal for characters who primarily use magic, ranged attacks, or support abilities, such as Garnet (as a summoner), Eiko, and sometimes Zidane when he's not actively using physical attacks.
The effectiveness of each row can be influenced by enemy positioning and attack types. Some enemies may have abilities that target specific rows, while others might have attacks that bypass the row system entirely. Additionally, certain abilities and spells are desed to be more effective from one row over the other.
Here's a general guideline for character placement:
- Front Row: Physical attackers (Zidane, Steiner), characters focusing on close-range abilities.
- Back Row: Magic users (Vivi, Garnet, Eiko), ranged attackers, healers, and support characters.
You can switch characters between rows during battle by using the 'Change' command or by selecting specific formation options in the menu before combat. Experimenting with different formations based on the enemy you're facing is crucial for success. For instance, placing a fragile magic-user in the back row protects them from heavy physical assaults, allowing them to cast spells more freely.
| Row | Damage Dealt (Physical) | Damage Received (Physical) | Ideal For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front | Normal | Normal | Physical Attackers |
