Dali & Lindblum

Following your dramatic escape from the Evil Forest, your journey leads you to the quaint, seemingly peaceful village of Dali. However, beneath its rustic charm lies a chilling secret that will begin to unravel the true nature of the world around you. After uncovering the truth, you'll embark on a journey to the magnificent city of Lindblum, a technological marvel and the stage for the exhilarating Festival of the Hunt.

Dali: A Village with a Dark Heart

Upon arriving in Dali, take a moment to appreciate its pastoral facade. However, don't be fooled by the quiet atmosphere; there's much to discover and a critical plot point to uncover here. Your primary objective is to investigate the strange occurrences and the mysterious factory.

Uncovering Dali's Dark Secret (Missable Content Warning!)

The truth about the Black Mages is central to the narrative and is revealed through careful exploration and interaction. Missing certain steps can lead to confusion later, so follow these instructions closely:

  1. Initial Exploration & Rest: After the initial cutscenes, head to the Inn. You'll encounter a suspicious individual. After resting, Zidane will wake up alone.
  2. Investigate the Windmill: Go to the windmill at the north end of the village. You'll find a trapdoor leading underground.
  3. The Underground Factory: Navigate through the underground passages. This area is linear but keep an eye out for treasure chests.
  4. Witness the Truth: You'll eventually stumble upon a horrifying factory where Black Mages are being mass-produced. This is a pivotal moment in the story, revealing the true nature of these beings and the sinister operations at play.
  5. Confrontation: After witnessing the factory, you'll be reunited with your party and confront the villagers, leading to your escape from Dali.
Essential Purchases & Abilities in Dali

Before diving into the factory, visit the local shops. Dali offers crucial upgrades for your party, especially for Vivi and Steiner.

Weapon Shop Recommendations:
  • Zidane:
    • Mage Masher: If you haven't acquired it already, this dagger teaches the Flee ability, invaluable for escaping tough encounters.
  • Vivi:
    • Rod: Teaches Fire and Blizzard. If Vivi doesn't have these, prioritize it.
    • Oak Staff: Teaches Thunder. Essential for completing Vivi's basic elemental spell set.
  • Steiner:
    • Iron Sword: Teaches Minus Strike, a powerful ability that deals damage equal to Steiner's current HP minus 1. Useful for finishing off weakened foes.
  • Dagger:
    • Dagger: If you don't have it, this teaches Detect, which reveals enemy weaknesses.
Armor Shop Recommendations:

Focus on upgrading armor for all characters, prioritizing defense and magic defense. Look for:

  • Linen Cuirass: Good physical defense for Steiner.
  • Leather Plate: A solid upgrade for Zidane and Dagger.
  • Wristbands: Basic arm protection for all.
  • Feather Hat: Provides a decent boost to Magic Defense.

Ability Prioritization: Ensure Vivi has learned Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder. For Steiner, Minus Strike is a good early damage option. Zidane's Flee can save you from sticky situations.

Enemies in Dali

While exploring the village and especially the underground factory, you'll encounter a few enemy types:

  • Mandragora: Plant-type enemies, weak to Fire.
  • Vice: Small, agile creatures.
  • Black Mages (Type A): These are the standard production models. They primarily use basic elemental magic (Fire, Blizzard, Thunder). They are not particularly strong but can be annoying in groups. Focus them down quickly.

Journey to Lindblum: Cargo Ship and Black Waltz No. 2

After escaping Dali, you'll board a Cargo Ship. This segment is mostly linear, but be prepared for a boss fight.

Boss Battle: Black Waltz No. 2

This is your second encounter with a Black Waltz. He's more powerful than his predecessor but still manageable.

  • HP: ~1000
  • Weaknesses: Wind (use Zidane's Soul Blade with a Wind-elemental weapon if available, or Freya's Jump if she's in your party).
  • Resistances: None notable.
  • Immunities: None.
  • Strategy:
    • Black Waltz No. 2 primarily uses elemental magic. Have Dagger cast Protect on the party if she has it.
    • Vivi should use his strongest elemental spells.
    • Steiner can use Minus Strike for significant damage, or simply attack.
    • Zidane should focus on physical attacks or using items.
    • Keep an eye on your HP and use Potions or Dagger's Cure as needed.
    • Steal: Try to steal a Mage Masher and a Leather Plate from him.

Lindblum: The Grand City and the Festival of the Hunt

Welcome to Lindblum, a sprawling metropolis and a stark contrast to the rural areas you've explored so far. This city is a hub of activity, and you'll have plenty of opportunities to explore, gather information, and participate in a grand event.

Initial Exploration & Key Locations

Lindblum is divided into three main districts, accessible via the Aircab system. Take your time to visit each one:

  • Industrial District: Home to the Synthesis Shop (crucial for combining items), the Weapon Shop, and the Armor Shop. Stock up on supplies and upgrade your gear.
  • Theater District: Features the Tantalus Hideout and the Art Museum. Explore for lore and potential side quests.
  • Business District: Contains the Inn, Item Shop, and various NPCs with valuable information.
Recommended Purchases in Lindblum

Lindblum's shops offer significant upgrades. Prioritize these:

Weapon Shop:
  • Zidane:
    • Butterfly Sword: Teaches Skill (enables stealing rare items more easily) and What's That!? (inflicts Confusion).
  • Vivi:
    • Cypress Pile: Teaches Poison and Sleep.
  • Steiner:
    • Broadsword: Teaches Armor Break (reduces enemy defense) and Power Break (reduces enemy attack). Essential for boss fights.
  • Dagger:
    • Healing Rod: Teaches Cure and Shell. If she doesn't have Shell, get this.
Armor Shop:

Look for the best available armor for each character. Prioritize items that teach new abilities or offer significant stat boosts.

  • Plate Mail: For Steiner, teaches Cover.
  • Chain Plate: For Zidane and Dagger.
  • Magician Hat: For Vivi, teaches Clear-Headed.
  • Glass Armlet: For all, teaches Add Status.
Synthesis Shop:

This is a new feature! Experiment with combining items to create more powerful gear. A common early synthesis is combining a Tent with a Phoenix Pinion to create a Phoenix Down.

The Festival of the Hunt

This is a major event in Lindblum and a fun competition. The goal is to hunt monsters around the city within a time limit. The character who accumulates the most points wins a prize.

Festival Mechanics & Strategy:
  • Participants: Zidane, Freya, and Vivi. Dagger will be watching.
  • Time Limit: 12 minutes.
  • Scoring: Different monsters yield different points. Larger, tougher monsters give more points.
    • Zaghnol: The main target, worth 500 points.
    • Mu: 10 points.
    • Bomb: 20 points.
    • Fang: 30 points.
    • Hedgehog Pie: 40 points.
  • Strategy:
    • Prioritize the Zaghnol: This monster appears in the Business District. It's tough, but defeating it is crucial for winning.
    • Use Aircabs: Travel between districts quickly to hunt more monsters.
    • Conserve MP: While Vivi's magic is powerful, save some for the Zaghnol.
    • Teamwork (sort of): While it's a competition, your party members will still assist you in battles.
    • Winning is not mandatory: The story progresses regardless of who wins, but the prizes are worth it.
Festival of the Hunt Rewards:
  • 1st Place (Zidane): 5000 Gil
  • 1st Place (Freya): Coral Ring (absorbs Thunder damage, teaches Lancer and Man Eater)
  • 1st Place (Vivi): Theater Ship Card (a rare Tetra Master card)
  • 2nd Place: 2500 Gil
  • 3rd Place: 1250 Gil

Guide's Recommendation: Aim for Freya to win! The Coral Ring is an excellent accessory, especially for upcoming boss battles, and Lancer is a powerful ability for her. To ensure Freya wins, try to have her deal the finishing blow to the Zaghnol, or focus on letting her defeat more smaller monsters if Zidane or Vivi are accidentally racking up points too quickly.

Notable NPCs & Side Content
  • Queen Stella's Stellazzio: In the Business District, you can find your first Stellazzio coin (Aries). Keep an eye out for these throughout the game; they are part of a long-term side quest.
  • Tantalus Hideout: Visit the hideout in the Theater District for some character interactions and minor items.
  • Art Museum: Explore for lore and background information on Lindblum.

Lindblum marks a significant progression in your journey, offering new equipment, crucial story developments, and an exciting mini-game. Take your time, explore thoroughly, and prepare for the challenges ahead!
