Evil Forest & Ice Cavern
Following the dramatic crash of the airship, your party finds themselves thrust into the mysterious and perilous Evil Forest. This section marks your true introduction to the world of Gaia and its combat system. Pay close attention to the mechanics introduced here, as they form the foundation for your entire journey.
Evil Forest: A Verdant Introduction to Combat
Upon regaining control, you'll be in the heart of the Evil Forest. This area serves as an excellent training ground for understanding the core combat mechanics of Final Fantasy IX, especially the crucial ability learning system.
Learning Abilities: Your First Step to Power
One of the most important aspects of Final Fantasy IX is learning abilities from your equipment. Unlike many RPGs where abilities are learned by leveling up, here, specific pieces of gear (weapons, armor, accessories) come with embedded abilities. To learn an ability:
- Equip the Item: Go to the 'Equip' menu and assign the item (e.g., Zidane's Dagger, Vivi's Mage Staff) to the character.
- Gain AP (Ability Points): Engage in battles. At the end of each victorious fight, your characters will earn AP. This AP is automatically distributed to the currently equipped items.
- Monitor Progress: In the 'Ability' menu, you'll see a progress bar next to each ability an equipped item offers. Once the bar fills, the ability is permanently learned and can be used even if you unequip the item.
- Equip Learned Abilities: After learning an ability, you must still equip it in the 'Ability' menu using your character's available Magic Stone points. Stronger abilities require more Magic Stones.
Pro-Tip: Focus on learning abilities from your starting gear immediately. Zidane's Flee and Detect, Vivi's Fire, and Steiner's Minus Strike are all invaluable early on.
Evil Forest Enemies
The Evil Forest introduces you to a few basic enemy types. These encounters are generally straightforward, but they provide valuable AP for ability learning.
- Fang: A wolf-like creature. Basic physical attacks.
- Plant Spikes: Stationary plant enemies. Can inflict minor damage.
- Plant Brain: A more resilient plant enemy.
Evil Forest Treasures & ATEs
Explore the Evil Forest thoroughly to find hidden items and experience character interactions through Active Time Events (ATEs).
- Items to Find:
- Potion x2: (Various locations, check sparkling spots)
- Tent x1: (Found in a chest or sparkling spot)
- Notable ATEs:
- "Vivi's Story": Provides insight into Vivi's past and his current predicament.
- "Steiner's Worries": Reveals Steiner's unwavering loyalty to Princess Garnet.

Ice Cavern: Navigating the Frozen Depths
After a brief narrative interlude, your party will enter the chilling Ice Cavern. This area introduces environmental hazards and a more challenging boss encounter.
Preparing for the Cold: Ice Resistance
The Ice Cavern is home to enemies that can inflict the "Freeze" status effect, which renders a character immobile. While full immunity might be difficult at this early stage, you can mitigate ice damage and status effects:
- Equip Ice-Resistant Gear: Check your inventory for items that offer resistance to ice.
- Silk Shirt: Often found or purchasable early on, provides some elemental resistance.
- Leather Hat: A basic headgear that might offer minor defense.
- Ability: Body Temp: Some accessories might teach the "Body Temp" ability, which prevents Freeze. If you have any, equip them and learn this ability.
Ice Cavern Enemies
The enemies here are generally stronger than those in the Evil Forest and often use ice-based attacks.
- Hedgehog Pie: Small, spiky creatures. Can cast Blizzard.
- Flan: Gelatinous monsters. Vulnerable to Fire, resistant to Ice.
- Wyerd: Winged creatures that can inflict physical damage.
Ice Cavern Treasures & ATEs
The Ice Cavern holds several valuable items and continues the narrative through ATEs.
- Items to Find:
- Potion x3: (Various locations, check sparkling spots and chests)
- Tent x1: (Found in a chest)
- Phoenix Down x1: (Crucial for reviving fallen allies)
- Mage Staff: (For Vivi, if not already equipped or found)
- Notable ATEs:
- "I Want to Be Your Canary": A poignant ATE involving Garnet and her feelings about her escape.
- "The Princess's Plan": Reveals more of Garnet's intentions.
Boss Battle: Black Waltz No. 1
At the end of the Ice Cavern, you'll face your first major boss, Black Waltz No. 1. This magical construct is a significant step up from regular encounters, so come prepared.
Black Waltz No. 1 Strategy
- Weakness: Fire! This is his primary vulnerability.
- Vivi: Have Vivi continuously cast Fire. This will deal significant damage. If he has learned Fira, even better!
- Steiner: use Steiner's Sword Art: Fire Sword. This ability, learned from his starting Iron Sword, imbues his physical attack with fire elemental damage. It's incredibly effective here.
- Physical Attacks: Zidane and Steiner (when not using Fire Sword) should focus on regular physical attacks. Black Waltz No. 1 doesn't have exceptionally high physical defense.
- Status Effects: Black Waltz No. 1 is susceptible to Slow. If Zidane has learned Slow from an accessory (like the Silk Scarf), casting it can significantly reduce the boss's turns, giving your party more opportunities to attack and heal.
- Healing: Keep an eye on your party's HP. Use Potions as needed. Zidane can also use Potions on other party members.
- Protecting Vivi: Black Waltz No. 1 will often target Vivi due to his magical prowess. Keep Vivi's HP topped up.
By exploiting his fire weakness and using your party's abilities effectively, Black Waltz No. 1 should fall relatively quickly. Victory here marks your escape from the Ice Cavern and a step closer to Burmecia.
