The Final Battle

Congratulations, adventurer! You've reached the climax of your journey. The final confrontation awaits, a multi-stage battle that will test every ounce of skill, strategy, and preparation you've accumulated. This guide will equip you with the knowledge to overcome both Trance Kuja and the enigmatic Necron, ensuring a triumphant conclusion to your epic tale.

Recommended Party Setup & Preparation

Before you even think about engaging, ensure your party is optimized. This is not the time for experimentation; bring your A-team and make sure they are fully equipped and have learned essential abilities.

  • Party Composition: A balanced party is crucial. We highly recommend a setup that includes:

    • Zidane: Essential for his high speed, Trance abilities (especially Grand Lethal), and access to Thief Swords for status effects.
    • Dagger (Garnet): Your primary healer and summoner. Her Eidolons will be invaluable. Ensure she has Auto-Potion, High Potions/Elixirs, and all her summons learned.
    • Steiner: Your physical powerhouse. His Sword Arts, particularly Shock and Climhazzard, deal immense damage. Equip him with the best heavy armor and a powerful sword.
    • Vivi: Your magical damage dealer. Doublecast Ultima, Flare, and Doomsday are devastating. Ensure he has Auto-Regen and all his Black Magic spells.
  • Alternative Party Members:
    • Freya: A strong alternative to Steiner for physical damage, especially with Dragon's Crest if you've collected enough Dragons. Jump can also make her temporarily invincible.
    • Amarant: Useful for his Chakra (healing without items) and Revive abilities, but generally less impactful than Steiner or Vivi for raw damage.
    • Quina: Blue Magic like Mighty Guard, White Wind, and Auto-Life can be game-changers, but requires specific preparation. Frog Drop can also deal massive damage if you've caught enough frogs.
  • Key Abilities & Equipment:
    • Auto-Haste: Absolutely critical for every character. Speed is paramount.
    • Auto-Regen: Constant passive healing helps mitigate damage.
    • Auto-Potion: Equip on your healer (Dagger) and ensure you have a stock of High Potions or Elixirs.
    • Ribbon/Clear Headed/Body Temp/Loudmouth: Protect against status effects, especially important for Necron. Ribbons are ideal.
    • HP +20%/30%: Maximizing HP is always a good idea for survivability.
    • Bright Eyes/Jelly: Protection against Blind/Poison, though less critical than other status protections.
    • Bird Killer/Beast Killer: While not directly applicable to the final bosses, these can be useful for random encounters in Memoria.
    • Best Weapons & Armor: Equip your ultimate gear. This includes Zidane's Ultima Weapon, Steiner's Ragnarok/Excalibur II (if you managed it), Vivi's Mace of Zeus, and Dagger's Whale Whisker.
    • Accessories: Prioritize accessories that grant Auto-Haste (Hermes Sandals), status immunity (Ribbon), or stat boosts.
  • Item Stock:
    • Elixirs/High Potions: Max out your stock.
    • Phoenix Downs/Mega Phoenix: Essential for reviving fallen allies.
    • Remedies: For curing various status ailments.
    • Ethers/Elixirs: To restore MP for your mages and summoners.

Boss Battle 1: Trance Kuja

The first true challenge of the final gauntlet is Kuja in his Trance form. He is faster, stronger, and more dangerous than any previous encounter.

  • HP: Approximately 55,000 HP
  • Weaknesses: None significant.
  • Resistances: None.
  • Absorbs: None.
  • Attacks:
    • Flare Star: Deals non-elemental magic damage based on the target's current HP. Can be devastating.
    • Holy: Powerful single-target Holy magic attack.
    • Ultima: Kuja's signature attack, dealing massive non-elemental magic damage to the entire party. This is his most dangerous ability.
    • Curaga: He can heal himself, though not frequently.
    • Reflect: Kuja may cast Reflect on himself, making direct magic attacks bounce back.
Strategy for Trance Kuja:
  1. Opening Moves:
    • Have Dagger cast Shell and Protect on the entire party if you don't have Auto-Shell/Protect.
    • Steiner should immediately use Shock or Climhazzard.
    • Vivi should cast Flare or Doomsday (if you have Shadow-absorbing gear, otherwise stick to Flare).
    • Zidane should use Free Energy or a regular attack to build Trance.
  2. Damage Output:
    • Physical Attacks: Steiner's Shock is your primary damage dealer. Zidane's Trance ability, Grand Lethal, is also incredibly powerful.
    • Magical Attacks: Vivi's Doublecast Flare is highly effective. If you have equipment that absorbs Shadow (e.g., Demon's Mail, Dark Gear), Doomsday becomes a viable option, healing your party while damaging Kuja.
    • Eidolons: Dagger's Bahamut and Ark are your strongest summons. Use them when MP allows. Make sure she has learned their full power by collecting all associated items (e.g., Garnet's Pendant for Bahamut).
  3. Defense & Healing:
    • Keep Shell and Protect active.
    • Dagger should be ready with Curaga or Full-Life. If she has Auto-Potion, it will help with passive healing.
    • Use Elixirs or Mega-Potions if the party's HP drops significantly, especially after Ultima.
    • If Kuja casts Reflect, either wait for it to wear off, use physical attacks, or use magic that pierces Reflect (e.g., some Eidolons or abilities like Flare Star from your own party).
  4. Trance Management:
    • Try to save Zidane's Trance for when Kuja is closer to defeat, allowing you to unleash a powerful Grand Lethal to finish him off.
    • Vivi's Trance (Doublecast) is also extremely useful for rapid-fire magic.
  5. Common Pitfalls: Don't get complacent. Kuja's Ultima can wipe out an unprepared party. Keep HP high and buffs active.

After defeating Trance Kuja, there's no break. You are immediately thrust into the final confrontation.

Boss Battle 2: Necron

The true final antagonist, Necron, is a being of pure nihilism. This battle is a marathon, not a sprint, and requires careful resource management and strategic debuffing.

  • HP: Approximately 54,000 HP
  • Weaknesses: None.
  • Resistances: None.
  • Absorbs: None.
  • Attacks: Necron has a wide array of devastating attacks:
    • Firaga, Blizzaga, Thundaga: Powerful elemental magic attacks.
    • Flare, Holy: Strong non-elemental and Holy magic attacks.
    • Meteor: Random damage to all party members.
    • Death: Instant KO. Protect against this with Auto-Life or status immunity.
    • Shell, Protect: Necron will cast these on himself.
    • Blizzara, Firaga, Thundaga, Watera: Elemental attacks that can also inflict status effects.
    • Doom: Inflicts the Doom status, leading to inevitable KO.
    • Grand Cross: Necron's ultimate attack. Deals random damage and inflicts a multitude of severe status effects (Silence, Darkness, Poison, Mini, Petrify, Slow, Stop, Zombie, etc.) to the entire party. This is the most dangerous attack.
    • Blue Shockwave: Single target physical attack that can inflict Petrify.
    • Neutron Ring: Non-elemental magic damage to all.
Strategy for Necron:
  1. Opening Moves & Buffs:
    • Immediately cast Shell and Protect on your entire party.
    • Dagger should cast Haste on everyone if Auto-Haste isn't equipped.
    • If Quina is in your party, cast Mighty Guard immediately.
    • Steiner should use Minus Strike if his HP is low, otherwise focus on Shock.
    • Vivi should cast Reflect on the party if you want to bounce Necron's single-target magic back, but be careful with your own healing.
  2. Debuffing Necron: This is crucial for managing the fight.
    • Slow: Zidane's Soul Blade (equipped with a weapon that inflicts Slow) or Quina's Bad Breath can inflict Slow, significantly reducing Necron's turns. This is highly recommended.
    • Blind: Can reduce the accuracy of Necron's physical attacks (though many are magical). Zidane's Soul Blade with a Blind-inflicting weapon can work.
    • Silence: Can prevent Necron from casting his powerful magic, but he is highly resistant. Still worth a try with Zidane's Soul Blade or Quina's Bad Breath.
    • Poison: A reliable source of passive damage. Zidane's Soul Blade or Quina's Bad Breath can inflict it.

Note: Necron is immune to Petrify, Freeze, Stop, Doom, Zombie, Mini, and Heat.

  3. Damage Output:
    • Physical: Steiner's Shock and Zidane's Grand Lethal (if Trance activates) are your best bets. Freya's Dragon's Crest or Jump are also excellent.
    • Magical: Vivi's Doublecast Flare is incredibly potent. Doomsday can also be used if your party has Shadow-absorbing gear.
    • Eidolons: Dagger's Bahamut and Ark are your heavy hitters. Use them strategically, especially when Necron is debuffed.
    • Quina: Frog Drop (if you've caught 99 frogs) can deal 9999 damage consistently. Limit Glove (if Quina's HP is low) is also a 9999 damage attack.
  4. Defense & Healing:
    • Maintain Shell and Protect at all times.
    • Dagger should prioritize healing with Curaga and reviving with Full-Life or Phoenix Downs.
    • Auto-Life: If Quina has this Blue Magic, cast it on your key party members (especially Dagger and Vivi) to automatically revive them.
    • Status Ailments: Necron's Grand Cross is the biggest threat. Have Ribbons equipped on as many characters as possible. Otherwise, use Remedies or Dagger's Panacea to cure multiple ailments. If a character is Petrified, use a Soft immediately.
    • Trance: Use Zidane's Trance for Grand Lethal. Vivi's Trance for Doublecast. Dagger's Trance for powerful summons.
  5. Resource Management: This is a long fight. Don't be afraid to use Elixirs to restore MP for Dagger and Vivi, especially if the battle drags on.
  6. Common Pitfalls:
    • Grand Cross: This attack can cripple your party. Be prepared with status immunity or quick recovery.
    • Death/Doom: Ensure your party is protected against instant KO.
    • Running out of MP: Manage your magic users' MP carefully.

With careful planning, consistent damage, and diligent healing and debuffing, Necron will eventually fall. Witness the culmination of your journey and enjoy the unforgettable ending of Final Fantasy IX!
