Items & Equipment

In Final Fantasy IX, items and equipment play a crucial role in character development and combat. This section details important items available for purchase or acquisition, including those found at the Treno auction house, and explains how Ability Points (AP) are gained and applied to equipment.

After visiting the areas near Treno, head back to the town to check the auction. You can find several new items available for bidding:

  • Feather Boots: Only sold if you don't have any in your inventory.
  • Anklet: Only sold if you don't have any in your inventory.
  • Dark Matter: This item is highly recommended as it can teach the Odin summon to Dagger. It typically costs around 19,000 Gil. This is the only way to obtain it outside of the game's superboss.
  • Rat Tail: This item can be bought for approximately 17,000 Gil. You can sell it to the Adventurer near the Bishop's House. Refuse his first offer to sell it for 25,000 Gil.

Ability Points (AP) and Equipment:

As you engage in battles, both random encounters and boss fights, your characters will earn Ability Points (AP). These AP contribute to learning abilities associated with equipped items. Not all characters can learn every skill, as some are character-specific. For example, the Flee ability on the Mage Masher can only be learned by Zidane.

Characters can use an ability as long as the corresponding equipment is equipped. However, if the ability is not mastered, it will be lost once the equipment is unequipped. Equipping multiple items that grant the same ability will accelerate the learning process for that ability.
